Happy holidays to all again, and hello.
GT has been aboout three commercially-available cars that are the focal points. Among the most popular are the Toyota Supra, the Nissan Skyline, and the Honda NSX. If you know your JGTC, all three cars are in the JGTC, while the NSX is active in both GT500 and GT300. Which of these three is better? Are they equal? Are they different in characterstics, but equal in all other aspects? Let me see what I can recall about these three Japanese terrors...
THE TOYOTA SUPRA: BALANCED
The Supra is one of my personal favorites. I think even the GT500 and once-Le Mans running counterparts proved this car to be agile and powerful without leaning too much on either aspect. The car is possibly the most affordable of the three and when tuned or modified, almost any look or upgrade makes it better. This machine knows no limits, and I'm sure the Tom's Team in Japan were partying all night long in the Shibuya or Ginza districts of Tokyo, Japan when they finally beat the Skylines for the JGTC championship in 1997.
THE NISSAN SKYLINE: ALL POWER
The Skyline is very stylish for a car that weighs as much as a Camaro or a NASCAR stock car. It is a supercar available in rear-wheel drive, or more traditionally, 4-wheel-drive. Suprisingly, it has been in rally racing before (at least I think). The Skyline has also been to Le Mans, but too heavy to keep up (just like the Supra). The Skyline seems to be powerful, but doesn't let the excessive use of power subtract its handling capabilities. The JGTC Skylines have a considerable number of victories over the Supra. The racing variants look and perform greater than the street model, and at one time, they were 4WD until the JGTC required cars to be 2WD. Since they turned to front-rear, they still manage to perform as well as if it was still 4WD. It is then, no wonder why import enthusiasts love this car, even though not legal for America in Japanese trim.
THE HONDA/ACURA NSX: A UNIQUE SUPERCAR
The NSX is one of the few cars to have only one (and possibly two in the near future) cosmetic changes. Have you ever been next to one or seen one on the road? The NSX almost looks like a Japanese Ferrari with about as much power and handling to make the Italan supercar enthusiasts want to eat their words about negatively critizing it. This car also been to Le Mans, and the Kunimitsu (in Japanese, say it like "koo-nee-meet-soo") NSX won in class (GT2). The JGTC NSXes only continued the success of the more than 60 years of Japanese racing excellence of Honda. Until that "snorkel" was put on the 2003 variant of the Mugen/Dome ("doh-mei" in Japanese) looked pretty lovely. The NSX is still an agile car even since its 1991 introduction.
So which car is better, if you had the money to buy, tune, and maybe even race one of these Japanese beauties?
