Hi Guys.. I just booked my 1st driving lesson, Monday at 1.00 .. And I'm really quite nervous - So what can I expect from my 1st one? :D

Depends have you driven with your parents/older siblings/etc. before?
I drove with my parents for more than a year before I had a lesson, so my first lesson involved 15 minutes of checking things I already knew. Then the rest of the lesson was trying to get used to the instructors car. His lancer drove really weirdly compared to my dads 4X4. :ouch:

If you haven't driven before then he'll probably start with the basics. Good luck.

Why I booked some driving lessons to learn manual he asked what I knew and I just told him that I need to learn manual as I need a new car and learning manual will widen my possibilities and since I was on my full license I just spend about 5 minutes checking mirrors and adjusting seats.

What does a single lesson cost in America? Is it 30, 45 or 60 minutes?

When I took Behind the Wheel, a lesson was for half an hour. I don't remember how much it cost, but I think you paid for the entire course (several lessons leading up to your final test), not the individual lessons. It probably differs by state though.

Guys.. I'm not American :)

Cost - £200 for 10 hour long sessions :)

and I've never driven before, but my Step Dad took me to an industrial estate earlier this evening and taught me .. the basics. *How to not stall 7 times in a row* :D

Cost me $50 for an hour lesson, but costs will change from school to school.
They will also have deals like 5 lessons for the price of 4.

Hm, mine was ~1600€. To be fair, it would've been way less if I would've spent more time on it and kept on working on it instead of taking a 6 months break. Oh and I've failed the first practical test. Why? No clue, even my instructor couldn't understand the reason.

Whatever you do: keep your tail up and get through it as fast as possible.

Driving is taught in high school here, with the same high quality results we get from science, math, history, and language lessons.

But it's free.

Here in NZ, the government's solution to the high accident rate is to increase the driving age which does nothing because the age group that are involved in the most accidents are 18-24 year old's. I had 2 driving lessons before going for my restricted license. Before them I thought I would fail my practical, but afterwards I knew that I would pass and I did.

What your driving instructor will teach you is what the examiners look out for during your driving test, Such things as making sure you check your mirrors 3 times before turning, parking an acceptable distance from the curve, how to properly reverse park & a few other bits & pieces.

The other thing the instructor will teach you is not to get into bad driving habits prior to taking your exam.

I wouldn't count on getting far beyond a quiet carpark and a few backstreets in your first lesson - most of it will likely be taken up getting to know the basics. Good luck though 👍

I failed my first test for, and I quote, 'proceeding through a gap which was too narrow'. :odd: My first thought was, 'well I got through it didn't I?' The testers don't like over confidence.

I have a question. Why would you need to pay for driving lessons? Why wouldn't your parents or a friend just teach you to drive? When I turned 16 I went and got my permit, and my grandparents, and some family friends took me to drive several times, then I just went and took the driving course you have to take and got my license. I can't imagine having to pay someone to teach one of my kids to drive, when I could just do it myself. Maybe some countries are different, but I see no reason to pay someone for driving lessons unless that's the law and how it has to be done.

Trouble is they confuse confidence with basic spatial awareness a lot of the time. Not everyone who makes small gaps is being over confident, some people can tell if they can make a gap safely. If they can't they probably shouldn't be driving!

But yeah your first lesson will just be in a car park learning the basics followed by a few drives round some back roads. My instructor actually took me onto a busy residential through road in the middle of town at the end of my first lesson, he said my road positioning was so good he felt I could do it :P

2nd lesson was on a dual carriageway. Oh and don't worry about being nervous, everyone is for their first lesson but you soon settle into it. My instructor said that anyone who doesn't worry about their first lesson is either lying or too cocky to be a good driver.

They have to have a certified course completion to proceed. Like I said before, we Americans don't want to be inconvenienced with an actual learning process, we just want to dive in and start maiming each other on the highways immediately.

 Don't say that, I'm going to be driving over there at some point next year!

^^

I never actually learned anything "new" in terms of technique or driving, but merely I knew what the examiners look for and what not to do. I took 3 lessons just to learn these things and passed my practical first go.

Its worth it just for all the odd bits you need to do.

Guys. I just passed my driving test. 4 minor faults, all at the very start while I was really nervous.. So yeah! I just passed my test. :D

Good work, Alex!

Now, go enjoy yourself, man. Excellent thread on How To Pass Your Driving TEST.
Much good advice.
