First off, welcome to GTP. :)

Secondly, can I convince you to reverse your interest in street racing? It's dangerous, illegal, and those two points aside, you'll soon find out that the majority of people on GTP hate street racing. Including me.

well not exactly street racing, but import cars. i should have been more clear. I find the GTR r34 to be insanely sexy. Thanks for the welcome!

Ah, a young driver, I see. I read that AE86 thread that you got yourself a Saturn.

As far as street racing goes, all I gotta say is that you cannot restrain yourself from street racing, that's impossible. At your age, you just will not give up the addiction. ;) However, important thing is that never be overconfident of your driving skills - that's what kills a driver. You have to understand that a car cannot handle miracles without proper upgrades. There are a few types of driving skills you need to learn before considering yourself a good driver.

When you first drive, you will find a lot of blind spots from the rear and the sides of the car. First, get rid of the blind spots as soon as possible by getting those small circular convex mirrors for each side. Then get 18" to 22" rear mirrors at any auto shop. This will eliminate any parallel parking errors.

Second, assuming you have very good shocks and big, stock steering wheels, is to learn how to drive in a straight line without your hands and with your left thigh only. This sounds VERY ridiculous but when you're talking with a cell phone (which is unavoidable at this age) this will be pretty handy on the highway. Do this on a parking lot at low speeds for the first month or two. This takes about half a year to learn. You can't make mistakes on this one.

If you want more info of how to really become a safe driver, let me know.

what are you teaching this kid?

getting caught street racing will get you locked up at least for few days as well as your car being impounded in california. street racing is what 16 year old kids do with their civics trying to be cool. either hit the tracks or stay away from racing all together.

and dont drive while talking on the phone. you never know what might happen, even in a straight line. learn to drive properly and dont screw around behind the wheel, its a huge responsiblity for a 16 year old.

Don't you get it? That is exactly what a parent will teach to his/her kid, and THAT IS WHY IT WON'T WORK! Think about it, no this, no that, but you know what? They disobey simply because they're not allowed to do this. They WONDER WHY it is not allowed. This is called curiousity. Hell, I can also tell him don't talk on the phone, no street racing. How hard can that be? But no, reality isn't that easy buddy. That's like, go absentice for the rest of your life. No sex, because this will give you AIDS, that will give you Hepatitis B. See, IT WON'T WORK, it's proven. I rather want him to know the SKILLS OF BECOMING A GOOD DRIVER, and not the CONSQUENCES OF BEING A BAD DRIVER. But the decision is his.

Thanks for the info. I just turn my phone on silent whenever i drive, whoever calls can wait. Street racing is interesting but i wouldnt attempt it myself because any ticket/citation would bump the hell outta my insurance and i wouldnt be able to pay that much.
