Just upgraded to XP

Finnaly after a year of hell of Windows ME I decided to buy Xp I've been putting it off for so long.--Great OS I like the fact that you can esaily manage programs and such...

Anything I should be aware of when using this?

Download Service pack 1a, or whatever the latest one is for XP. Download security updates also.

Then visit www.blkviper.com and remove all the unnecessary crap that Microsoft thought was a good idea to include.

ME has to be the worst of the newer windowses, but XP does come quite close in my book, mainly because of it's over helpfulness.

Wow, could you please not type in all caps. Do you ever learn?

I don't use Windows update because I only have a 56K connection and I don't want Windows stealing what precious little bandwith I have. I tend to check the MS website occasionally for critical updates and I have a Virus scanner that automatically updates.

My PC has never had a virus, ever.

ya i forgot bout the caps but not everyone still has 56k has broadband is comming more mainstream. And what about those few people that don't check windows update i like ask allmost everyone have they checked it and there like wtf is windows update, and i show them and they like have 200 or so updates. I don't think it would take any bandwith up if it is not runing all the time i think it only runs when u first start up and that is it

What's wrong with System Restore? It's a great tool, especially if you upgrade to the newest Detonator drivers every time they get updated.

I just tend to wait for the Service packs, which are allot of those updates bundled into one big file. I should have rephrased that, I usualy download critical updates only when I hear of a major flaw like the vunerability the MS blast worm (I forget, was it a worm?) exploits.

Edit: Argh!
As for system restore, well it takes up diskspace and I have long given up bothering with games, so I don't have any reason to rollback drivers.

definently disable that messenger service!!!! ashampoo make a nifty little program that'll disable it w/ a click of a button, not sure where to find it tho..cant remember where i got it..download.com maybe? anyways, that thing is so annoying...meant to be used to send messages in between computers in a network, has been raped by people sending you SPAM messages instead. even on 56k it was a nuisance.

Ok, I got one more question.

A friend of mine loaned me XP pro with one more "install" on it. But now that I got Xp home is it ok to just put in the xp pro cd and overwrite the files?

I wouldn't rate XP poorly because it's "overly helpful". ME is terrible because of the excruciatingly poor memory management. XP is far too stable to ever be rated a poor product. Besides, you can turn all the "helper" stuff off if it bugs you...that's what I did.

...and yes, keep your box updated! Blaster wouldn't have been a problem if people updated regularly.

Fair enough, it is stable and it does improve on Windows 2000. I have Xp on our family PC and have had no problems with it whatsoever, but it uses about double the memory than my computer using Win2K. This is just with nothing running barring a Virus checker and some firewall software. This is with all the un-essentials removed from XP and some from the 2000 machine.

I know someone who used a machine with ME without reformatting it for about 4 years. I don't know how the guy put up with it.

I didn't have to reformat ME...I was just constantly rebooting.

As for RAM consumption, XP ran fine on 256 MB of PC 2100 for me. It was a little sluggish when starting or stopping a memory intensive application, but that's about it. I cured that with an additional 512 MB stick. :D

Isn't 512 the standard now anyway?

I installed a RC version of XP (In the initial setup it was still calling it whistler) on a 400mhz celeron with 64mb of ram. Now that was slow, although I did install Win2k on a Pentuim Pro 166 as well, just to see how slow it would be.

No, no...additional. 768 MB total.

Ahh, yeah I see.

Recently I haven't been reading posts properly and making really stupid gramatical errors.
