1. JV was past his time in 1998

2. sato deserves the drive as about as much as wilson/firman deserve their drives; that is, he/they dont

1. Villeneuve's prime was definitely the time he was interested in wringing the neck of the car. Therefore, as Mike says, JV's prime ended with Williams' loss of the Works Renault engines.

2. He definitely has talent, as his domination of British F3 in 2001 showed. However, he found it tought to adjust to F1 and so a year of testing was right for him. It's odd then that it's hard to find any examples of him actually doing any testing, apart from a couple of weeks ago at one of the Spanish tracks. He could be quite good, but I rather sense that the team will gravitate around Button even more next year.

The question of whether someone "deserves" their place in F1 is always a thorny one. Mike is being harsh on Wilson & Firman, because whilst they (Firman especially) have proven themselves to be pretty much completely unable to justify their place, it was definitely clear that they did both at least deserve a shot at F1 glory.

Does Sato deserve another go? Yeah, I think so. Given that Fisichella is struggling to get the Jordan onto the 6th row, and the fact that Jordan have suffered something like 15 mechanical retirements this year, it's difficult to really judge someone's ability based on points scored in a year at Jordan. I've seen Ralph Firman twice this year though, and he was verging on the dangerous both times.

The problem i have is drivers who "buy" their way into drivers seats ala Diniz and Wilson. They dont really deserve the place based on talent, but thanks to a rich daddy or gullable public, they buy their way in.

I dont agree with the "they deserve a shot" theory. A lot of capable drivers in F3 and F3000 and F Renault deserve a crack at the big time. Maybe have a minardi style team that just incubates the "potentials"?

Hmm, JV came to test at Kyalami here in SA once. It was with ralf in that hideous Westfield Red Williams. Think it was just preseason stuff tho...

Diniz, yes, I agree. Although he did have an uncanny ability to get a Forti to the chequered flag, even if it was 17 laps down. That was the team that caused the 107% rule...

Wilson was F3000 champion, so one could be forgiven for inferring that he was a reasonable peddler. Not like Gaston Mazzacane. Ugh!

How do you find the "potentials" if you don't give them a shot?

"Winfield" was the sponsor, and it wasn't attractive. A lot of the teams used to go to Kyalami for preseason testing, because it was warmer in February than Barcelona. Then it rained for a couple of years and the teams decided that it was cheaper to go to Barcelona for a couple of days of dodgy conditions than to go to South Africa for a week of torrential rain storms.

Then of course, things got particularly difficult for Kyalami testing when some developer decided to plonk a couple of houses on the track.

My father raced a GT40 there in a 9hr race, in the dim-and-distant past.

i couldnt agree with you more. there are so many talented drivers out there, not just in europe but abroad who desreve a shot at the big time. for years i have thought that some of the long lasting champcar drivers like vasser and tracy and maybe even junquiera should get at least a test in a f1 car too see what they are capable of.

Winfield, thats it - sorry :embarrassed:

Mazzacane  remember Barbazza?

Yea, they also stopped testing cos the AA, who own Kyalami put in the worst corner in motor racing to "slow down the cars". Nobody particulary appreciated that move either

NOTE: the corner still exists :(

EDIT: GT40 - thats some racing pedigree

Yes, I read that too. Great quote from David Richards on the subject. It's a good thing that Mr Devil isn't around, that's JV gone for good now I would think.

Interestingly, there's talk of a deal being brokered vetween Villeneuve and Williams, for 2005. I can't see it happening though.

No doubt about that. I'd see him fill the seat that Coulthard so uselessly fills at McLaren.

You don't win the Indy 500, the CART championship and the F1 world title by pure luck. He's got it where it counts, too bad he's got such a big mouth.

You do win those championships by combining your ability with being in the right car at the right time though.

Jacques' 'interesting' approach to the way he presents himself to the public, in both verbal and non-verbal manners, is so far off what McLaren wants that even if they hadn't already signed Coulthard they wouldn't be taking Villeneuve.

Yes, but, you wrote:

There's some speculation Sato might take Villenueve's place at BAR for the Japanese GP.

One would assume that:
- this would be under pressure from Honda
- this would pretty well confirm Sato to partner Button for '04.

At no point did you write "this would be the result of a spoilt brat throwing all his toys out of the pram". :P

You would have been given due kudos for that! :)

True - and on reflection, I probably should have seen that coming...
