Howdy.
So I bought an Ouya because I wanted to try Kainy to stream PC games to any TV in my house. So far it works in that I can play games remotely, it just doesn't work very well. There's latency (probably unresolvable given that I'm already using 200mbps powerline LAN adaptors end-to-end), overscan (probably the Ouya's fault since I know the TV isn't set to overscan any more, I'll work it out eventually) and the software itself has a pretty terrible UI. The worst part, though, is that the software maps the Ouya controller as the keyboard and mouse.
Now, that might not sound too bad, but:
- The Ouya pad doesn't have a start or select/back button.
- Almost all games that support controllers allow a single button to perform multiple actions. Look at Just Cause 2; a 360 controller's B button can be used to perform melee attacks when the game isn't paused, but when paused it is used to go back or cancel in menus. Playing with a keyboard, V is melee and esc is go back/cancel when paused. So when an Ouya controller is emulating the keyboard, suddenly 10 buttons is nowhere near enough.
- Different games use the keyboard differently, so while you might need a certain set of keys for one game, the same set might not apply for another; if I map the Ouya controller to work in one game, that same map might not work in another. If I could map the controller to work like a 360 pad, the buttons will still function in other games.
- While you can have a fairly sizeable list of mappings in the Kainy client, switching between them is fiddly and annoying because you have to use the trackpad on the controller. Being able to emulate a controller would mean one mapping would fit many, many games.
So, yeah, something to map keyboard commands to a controller input thing would be massively useful to me. The problem is I haven't heard of anything that is the exact reverse of Xpadder or Joy2Key - which is what I need - hence why I'm turning to you.
There is an alternative to this, though; a USB or Bluetooth extender that works over wired LAN would mean I could just bypass the need to actually control anything via Kainy in the first place, but I've never seen such a thing. Any ideas on that front, maybe?
Thanks guys!
