This is a game I’ve played (verbally) while drinking and with my students in school using the cards included below glued onto playing cards. I’d like to introduce it to others out there because I think it’s a brilliantly simple concept which I’ve been tweaking over the years and would like any input on how to make improvements. It takes literally minutes to learn and can be played by anyone.

To play you can either use the templates provided (which I’ve personally used) or create your own by writing the words on a playing card. All cards must look identical when face down, like a playing card, so that cheating doesn’t occur.

The rules to this game are simple, the Tiger eats the Chicken, the Chicken eats the Worm, the Worm eats the Stick and the Stick beats the Tiger. Simple, right?

The game can be played without any bets (for ‘ickle children) or with poker chips, drinks or real cash (how I like to play). Each player gets one set of cards with the values – Tiger, Chicken, Worm and Stick.

This game can be played with however many players you wish, but it can’t be played solo, so go get some friends, loner! It uses a pool like ‘winner stays on’ system meaning only two players are active in the game at any one time.

Both players place an equal betting amount on the table, 10c, a shot of tequila, car keys etc... For this example I’m using $1 bets, with all players able to use no more than $10 for an entire game (this is just an example but I suggest not playing for thousands of dollars!). Players then chose a card and place it face down on the table. At this point players may raise bets but that is optional. Both cards are flipped to show the face and the results to who wins and loses are as follows:

- High card wins (Chicken beats Worm etc…) Winner takes the pot, stays on and another challenger rotates into play.

- Odd pair with no win (Chicken - Stick) adds half the original bet (50c) to the pot and the game restarts

- Matching pair (Tiger – Tiger) adds another $1 to the pot and the game restarts.

The winner of each game remains while the challengers rotate into play (like pool, see?). The game continues until one winner has won $10 from each player. In the instance of shots for bets there should be a maximum amount allocated to each player to play with, the loser of each game being the one to drink. My advice is not to play for your car, but hey, anything goes.

This game is open to adaption and if you do try it and find a good way to play then please do post your findings. I’d also suggest printing it on office supplies (if you chose to print at all) as it’s free that way. ;)

How many cards do you use to make a pack? It obviously wouldn't work with just 4, a standard 52 would be a good idea.

Minimum of 8 cards for a game. Each player only needs one of each (total of four cards) to play.

When I played with my students I just had 2 sets; the winner held onto theirs and the challenger took the cards from the loser. I laminated them for durability but that's because I was playing with 4 year olds. :)

Sounds like this could be done with a regular pack of 52 as well. Just change the tiger, stick, worm and chicken to spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. Maybe something like diamond buys the spade, spade buries the heart, heart wins over the club, and club smashes the diamond; I'm sure someone can come up with better interrelationships than what I have here.

Yup, another way to play. That's a good suggestion using the playing cards, but 52 cards might be too many.
The four cards in a hand are replayed after each game, not discarded. There isn't much need for a full, regular deck of cards unless you have over 10 people playing!

Does simplify the game for anyone not bothering to use the original cards, which, after all, were designed for kids to play with.

Do you think I have even a minute to spare for another mindless addiction?
However I shall pass on this idea to certain younger folk I know who have nothing better to do. Thanks. :) 👍

So it's a one-on-one each time, both players have a pile of cards on them, they get to look at what they want to use, and then place it face down beside each other. Each player then bets which one of the two cards is a winner? If that is the premise of the game, is there even a need to have duplicate cards?

I must be missing something here.

No, there isn't any need to duplicate the cards after there are two sets of four, unless there is more than one game going on at one time.

You are correct @AOS-
