Built in 1987 under the oversight of Horatio Pagani, who was then working for Lamborghini's composites R&D department, the Countach Evoluzione is mostly constructed from Carbon Fiber and Kevlar. It also did without such luxuries as a proper interior, headlights, windscreen wipers or paint. As such, it weighed in at only 980 kgs, a full 500 kilos lighter than the production QV5000S. Its engine was slightly upgraded to 490 bhp, and this resulted in its recording a speed of 205 mph at the Nardo circuit in Italy. Ultimately, the composite structure was deemed to costly for production, and so the Evoluzione's final use was in a frontal impact test which allowed Lamborghini to study the safety benefits of composite structures.

It would be nice to experience this unique test bed that would ultimately come to influence the construction of an entire generation of supercars for years to come...

It's so ironic that even within the greatest automobile stories the best of minds falter...Automobili Lamborghini started when Enzo Ferrari shot Ferruccio's suggested improvements down and he created the company in vengeance and anger. Fast forward, and Horacio Pagani, working at Lambo, tries to convince the company to invest in composites. They are not interested. So he takes a loan, gets his own autoclave, and created the Evoluzione in his spare time iirc. And as OP says, the car is so much lighter and performance improved greatly, yet...Lambo says since Ferrari weren't doing similar, neither would they!! After how the company started, it's hard to fathom how this mindset was in place...anyways soon F40 came out made of composites and was the fastest car in the world, and while the Diablo could beat it in top speed, there was no contest in acceleration or handling as Diablo was much heavier! Goes to show - great as some people in history are - they're still people and do NOT learn from mistakes! And ofcourse Horacio goes on to make his own lightweight supercars.

PS avatar above - V16T: When Chrysler ran over the original Diablo design with their neuter scooter of more conservative engineers, the original designer was pissed and started Cizeta. No complaints from my end but many said the Diablo was "soft" especially compared to the Countach. It certainly deserved a V16! Does no one learn???!!
