i have been scouring this forum for about an hour trying to find out how to play online on gt4

I have the older ps2 (ps2 chunky) and the LAN adapter

the game wont connect, i have no idea what im doin pleas help:dunce::dopey:

Quite so.

GT4 will not connect to the internet by itself - you need many, many accessories. LAN Mode is exactly what it says on the tin - a Local Area Network.

ok-noob question what is xlink?

XLink is how you get GT4 to play online. It's software which runs on your PC which fools the PS2 connected to it into thinking that the PC - or rather a PS2 connected to someone else's PC running XLink out there on the interweb - is another PS2 on a Local Area Network.

hamstrings' post pretty much covers it all.

From your original post, I think you are confusing two different things.

1. LAN play involves hooking up PS2s on a local area network (LAN), usually in the same building. You do this when your friends show up at your house (or workplace ;)) with their Playstation consoles, wheels and GT4 discs. GT4 handles all of this using the LAN Game option in Arcade Mode.

2. Online play involves hooking up PS2s to the internet to play with others that do not live nearby. You do this when your friends live far away, and it becomes impractical to give them plane tickets, accomodation and spending money just to race you in GT4. Or, some of your friends (or complete strangers) cannot be bothered to lug their Playstations over. 👎 The solution is to use the internet to connect the consoles together. However, Polyphony Digital never completed the online mode, so Xlink Kai is needed to simulate a local area network. The PS2s would think they are on the same LAN, while the consoles can be across the world.

Is it option one or option two?

The firmware on the PS2 is non-upgradeable, but that is not the problem.

Visit the XLink Kai site to read the quick start guide and the FAQ in the help section. You need to make sure the PS2 and the computer that will be running XLink Kai are both connected to the internet and also be on the same network.

Have you tried the tutorial in my second link? If you are, then what step are you stuck at?

If I understand you correctly, you are at the PlayStation 2 Version Information screen. However, there is no MAC Address row under the DVD Player row.

If this is the case, then check that the Network Adaptor is on correctly. You can also check the MAC Address using the Network Adaptor Startup disc.

@hamstrings

Do I need a PC to run online play with my buddies, or can I just connect to the cable modem? If I need a PC I guess I can use a wireless router since me game is in the basement and my PC is upstairs, right?

Thanks

ProTron, you need a PC to run XLink Kai on -- no PC, no online play. A wireless router would work fine if drilling holes and running CAT-5 cable is not an option. :)

db94lyfe, you need the MAC address of the PS2. Punching it into the IP calculator gets you the IP address to set the PS2 to in GT4. Since the calculator does not give you a subnet (netmask) address, you should use 255.255.0.0. Router address should be set to 0.0.0.0.
