Turn off TCS.
Turn off SFR.
Pretty much turn off all assists that aren't called ABS (1)
I think i used mine stock. . . perhaps change the oil, slap on a power mod (keeping it under the limit).
You could try softening the suspension as well.
I won these with over a minute each total gap (or more) pretty easily once I turned off the "assists"

Only settings I changed from stock were to set the centre diff to 50/50 for snow and 40/60 for dirt. Awesome car. My favourite of all the group c rally monsters from the 80s. Has the pleasure of seeing and hearing the real thing in action back then.
