Hello guys,

I have a problem with my laptop (Asus X550C), it simply won't start anymore. What happens is that I press the power button, I can hear the cooling fans inside the laptop starting up, but the screen stays black. After a few seconds the fans stop and the laptop remains in that state, with the power button lighting up but nothing else working.

This started about a month ago, at the time it wouldn't start maybe 1 time out of 10, so I couldn't be bothered to get it checked out. But last week, it froze while playing a Youtube video (there was no performance issues prior to that) and I haven't been able to start it at all since then.

I'm guessing that its probably a hardware issue, but other then that I don't have the knowledge to make a good guess on what it might be exactly. If anyone can help me out it would be very appreciated.

Try tapping ESC after you turn it on.
Also i would suggest you do this with the laptop plugged into a TV or monitor to rule out a bad LCD.

If you can open it up and re-seat the RAM.

Those laptops are a pain in the ass since you have to remove the whole underside to gain access to the mainboard IIRC.

Remove battery and power cable. Hold power button for 30 seconds to a minute. Reconnect battery and power cable. Test.

If that doesn't work, try as @Grayfox said and remove the RAM. Try them one at a time.

If that doesn't work, your PSU could be knackered.

If you don't mind my asking, what is the purpose of holding the power button down for thirty seconds after removing the battery and power? I could understand a second or so, but thirty to a minute?

Tried turning it on while connected to my TV through an HDMi cable, no results. Discharging didn't work either, so I guess its something pretty serious.
