Laser hitting disc

When loading GranTurismo 4 the laser hits the disc. It doesnt do it with any of the other games. Does anyone else have this problem?

Also I have tried readjusting the gear to change the angle of the CD tray and laser but it did not help. When I had it set to where the lense no longer hit the disc it was also not readable.

But when I put the game in there are two loud taps when the lense hits the disc. Anyone elses game does this?

I think i'm having similar problems with Need for speed Underground 2. Doesn't load, gives me a black screen and doesn't happen at any other game. It does make strange noises too, i'd like to know how to help this too, since i love that game!

That happens here when I play any GTA, even without many scratches... That clicking sound scares me. :scared:

The clicking sound is actually the lazer moving from the centre of the disc to the outside quickly (or vice-versa), not it hitting the disc. The reason it's doing this is that it's having trouble reading the game data, so it keeps resetting the position of the lazer to try re-reading. 👍

Would it help if you let the ps2 read it for a long time?

I was hoping that was what it was. But when I was making adjustments to the gear. I put the game in and watched it load with the PS2 open. I put pressure on the center of the CD so it would spin. I watched the laser(you can see it shining throught the disc). I could see the laser get bigger as it moved closer to the disc and when the tapping sound is heard the laser smacks the disc and blurrs then resets. I saw the laser hit the disc. I could see it getting big as it zoomed in and smacking the disc.

Strangely the disc never slows down when hit and there are no scratches on the CD. Also I adjusted the angle of the tray a few times by turning the white gear. Then I would put the game in to load again. The tapping noise either became less, worse or no tapping depending on where I set it. But when I set it so there was no tapping or hitting the game could not be read. So I reset the gear to where the game could read but the laser tapping/hitting returned. Im pretty sure the laser is hitting the disc. I guess there is no way around it. Just have to tolerate it.

Never like to hear that. :dunce:

This happened to me a few months ago, but never with the other PS2 games.

I took a can of compressed air, the kind with a straw you get a computer stores, opened the tray, turned off the console and shot the air up in there a few times.

Havent had a problem since.

For future reference: Never use compressed air on a laser. You can mess up the lens somehow by doing that.

It's been doing this ever since i bought it, i have to keep resetting it for 10 minutes or so until it starts, it seems to start much faster when the PS2 has already been on for a while with a different game.

Maybe its becasue your disc is so scratched and/OR smudged it has to move closer to be able to properly read it

my old one was incredibly scratched, but i bought a new one which wasn't scratched 5 or 6 months ago and it still does it.

I think if the actual master focusing adjustment (the white toothed dial inside the PS2 that adjusts the elevation of the whole laser assembly) is up too high, it will hit the disc. Is the machine having focusing problems as well? (i.e. the red, 'going nowhere' spinny wheel in between screens). If so, you'll probably find the laser cradle needs adjusting, and by the fact that it's striking the disc, I'd say you want to adjust it down.

I had the same thing happen to me, but I'd already been adjusting the laser bacause the 🤬 PS2 wouldn't focus, and when I wound it up too high it struck the disc. Hard. It actually gouged out the surface of the disc...

Mine does the same thing with DVD movies not games, well for now at lest. :scared: Mined you it is five or six years old and I played the hell out of it so I can't complain much about it playing up on me once in a while. It might be a good idea to use a blank disk or a DVD with home movie on it when you are adjusting the laser because someone is going to most likey be silly enough use there good game.:dunce:
