Just a quickfire story I thought was worthy of sharing. The United Nations Environment Programme has declared that, almost 100 years after its creation, no country in the world sells leaded petrol as a fuel for cars and lorries.

Most countries stopped selling leaded petrol beginning in the 1980s but Algeria, the last country to still sell leaded petrol commercially, finally ran out of supplies last year.

Thomas Midgley's legacy of creating the world's first CFC and discovering that tetraethyllead is a fantastic anti-knocking agent lives on but at least part of it has finally come to a close.

Wait does that finally mean we can just label the pumps as Petrol without putting Unleaded at the front?
Aeroplanes still have no smoking signs and their toilets still have ashtrays so... who knows. Commercial hangovers linger for a long time.

I remember buying leaded 4 star for my old 6-series as I'd heard that LRP wasn't good for it. I recall my shock and horror at having to pay £1.00/litre for it though... the diesel for my Peugeot was about 65p/litre IIRC.

... how times change :D Currently paying £1.50-£1.55 for 'super'. :boggled:

Probably have E10 at the front in future.

That sounds wonderful. I hear there's a remarkable correlation between the end of using leaded gasoline in the U.S. and the rate of violent crime falling off a cliff shortly afterwards.

Wonderful news!

Now tell all the old pilots sumping their piston airplanes and dumping 100LL on the ground at every airport in the US because they can't be bothered to buy a GATS jar. Unfortunately, leaded fuel is still alive and well in aviation and weirdly is only common in the otherwise most restrictive countries, especially North America.

I think they are taking the view that general aviation is such a small slice of the pie that we have let go of older planes running 100LL.
