If I was elected president, the first thing I would do is eliminate corporate donations to political campaigns. Lobbyists would be hunted down and exterminated like any other vermin.

I agree,... but why is it tolerated? Whaty positive purpose does it serve  Sorry for my ignerence, but I just cant see ANY good reason that it there.

I'm inclined to agree - corporations don't vote, and if they want political influence they can influence the votes of their employees.

We've got this thing happening in Sydney, where real estate developers are the biggest contributors to both political parties, and we've seen all sorts of scandals that have been quietly swept under the carpet here over the last 5-10 years. It's pretty blatant.

It's really more about the fact that the people/organisations in power are open to such influence. There really needs to be some sort of system of checks and balances, but at the moment pretty much any government from local to federal level is open to such abuse.

I'm pretty much impervious to sales pressure, whatever form it may take, so I really can't understand it.

It's almost funny, you can even look up a lobbyist in your phonebook. Strange...

Let me tell you what a grand thing it must be for a corporation to make a huge donation to your political campaign. Later, you look the other way when it comes time for said corporation to abide by the laws.

A lobbyist is a person or persons paid to represent a group and look after their Interest. Its not only the different industries and corporations that have lobies.
The Christian coalition has one the NAACP has one ACLU, NRA..etc. The purpose of a paid lobiest is to work with legislators so that they can better represent their constituancy..the fact that some have found ways to stretch the rules shoudn't surprise anyone. There are existing laws against bribery and extortion and lobiest are watched closely. Campain contributions on the other hand IMO should be much more strictly monitored and regulated. Even if a candidate is 100 % on the up and up the perception of undue influence is going to undermine his credibility and hence limit his effectiveness. And then you have the outright leech bastards that live off of campaign finance...It needs reform.

Government corruption if definitely worst at the local level. Arizona is a cesspool. The state is a billion dollars in the red (as many states are right now), and they are arguing over whether to cut education, child care, and public heath funding when something like 140 types of business are tax exempt... like barbers, dog groomers, massage parlours (whore houses), etc. It's a joke. I'd be happy to pay tax on my haircut to see the state get out of debt. And anyone who even mentions doing away with some of the outdated and irrelevant exemptions are accused of wanting to "raise taxes."

Harsh but fair. I think in the UK we'd pretty much like to do the same.

I think being English we'd give them a sporting head start. Can i borrow that M16 off EliteRacer?

Are you sure all lobbyists are bad, though? Elected representatives represent geographical areas. Lobbyists represent institutions and organizations. Not all institutions and organizations are bad. The NRA has lobbyists, and Planned Parenthood has lobbyists. Both organizations claim to represent some form of freedom.

Politics is too complicated for the average constituent. Congress votes on so many things the average citizen either doesn't know about, care about, or understand. The representatives in congress are in no better position a lot of the time. If they make decisions that hurt or contradict their constituents, it's their fault, not the lobbyists, wouldn't you say?

Not to mention NORMAL has lobbyist..Greenpeace..Senior citezens..pretty much anyone who feels that they have to be sure that the people they represent get a fair shake. So if you get rid of one lobby you have to get rid of them all..seems a little extreme..
