I thought that a stock McLaren was illegal in the U.S., because it didn't comply with U.S. emissions laws?

I know that at least one person converted a McLaren F1 for states use (though it ran a bit slower because of that).

Lol....Well it turns out M5 is wrong..Because the McLaren F1 deoes NOT comply with US Emissions....Even though Florida as a state has no emissions policy as a country it is not legal to bring into the united states, even through florida....Same goes for most of the other GOOD CARS...damn United states and their automobile lawz

It's legal to own..Not legal to drive..let's put it that way

As I understand it all of the F1's that were shipped to the US were sent to Ameritech - who made everyone of them emmisions legal. So, basically any McLaren you could get your hands on over here is legal.

Hmm...so would these emission laws change the performance of the car at all?

Yes, it would hinder its performance slightly.

ever heard about that guy in malaysia who bought a porsche GT1 but couldn't drive it cause it was illegal. you aren't allowed to drive LHD cars there, or something. so he parked it in his office and there it sits! :D

It's street legal. It holds the world record for the fastest street legal car. McLaren themself imported them over here in 1995 and 1996 - they had to jack up the price, in fact, to make it street legal.

So a dollar-millionaire wouldn't cut it then, Ps2racer. The stock McLaren F1 cost £625,000. If they have to jack the price up, then you won't have enough :D

I think a million would probably do it now that the car's six years old. Then again, the value could've actually appreciated.

Yep - as all 627hp 240mph supercars are... :D

"Street Legal" is a tricky term. To qualify for any of Guinness's "Street Legal" records, the car must be legal to drive on the road, without any modifications, in the country of origin. The manufacturer will probably try to make it street legal in the country for which the market is largest as well.

The CLK-GTR is a race car, and so not street legal. The CLK-GTR LM - the road derivative, with a revised integral rear wing - IS street legal in Germany and the UK at least.

The McLaren F1 is street legal in the UK. If you were to directly import one into the US from a UK owner, I doubt it would be legal to drive. However, the US-sourced cars are obviously street legal, or else they wouldn't be sold... The DMV would suddenly turn up the next day... :D

Josh The McLaren F1 that's here in Arizona isn't emissions compliant...therefore it's towed from place to place...Even though the company has been known to drive it from time to time dispite possible legal intervention...

Phoenix and Tucson and their metro areas have different emission laws than the rest of the state. And again, emission laws basically vary state to state.

hey M5 are you from AZ too? cuz both me an shinez are .... I head that someone once tested a Mclaren in AZ in the middle of summer and it kept overheating or something....not sure if it was true or not...

I always thought that the Mclaren did meet emissions....If not the US sucks because that means both Mclarens and skylines dont meet emissions and have to be modified.....maybee I should move...One good thing tho....I live in AZ...mostly desert...so I just wouldnt register the damn thing and drive it all day in the desert...then when I need to go back to civilization....I can buy a civic....that should help me save money for gas on the Mclaren....

Ps2..IF you can manage to stick a sponge in one of the resinators...And have it run ok...Then i'm sure you can own one.I wouldn't want one anyway...People would just pry open my engine bay cover and rip the gold out..
