length of lines on transmission chart

As stated in the title, I was wondering if anyone knew what it meant by the length of those lines on the transmission tuning screen. To help better explain what I mean is the lines that get shorter and longer as you change the ratios. I over heard a guy on the Mic say keep the lines straight across at the bottom end when talking about gears 3 - 5 (drag racing.) Also what does the lines have to do in relation to the dyno chart and power curve. Before when I tuned my transmission I simply kept a nice curve in the length of the lines and at a closer ratio. Thanks guys your help is greatly appreciated.
 
Hi, longer lines mean that when you're using an automatic transmission you'll be in that gear for longer (eg with a short line you will shift into the next gear at 150km/h, if the line is longer it will be 160km/h). The same applies to manual transmission, it's just easier to explain with an automatic.

Shorter lines mean you accelerate quicker but you'll hit the rev limit in top gear at a lower speed.
 
Don't take this personal but I'm going to say that's not entirely true. I think your getting confused with the distance between the lines. I'm talking about the lines themselves. I set a transmission to where each line from gears 3-6 are exactly the same in length but shift at later times due to distance between.
 
The transmission screen chart is bugged in my opinon. Gear lines extend where they shouldn't. Or better, it isn't clear what PD tried to accomplish.

The top gear extends all the way to the rev limiter while the other gears extend to redline. Personally, I agree that the length of the lines in GT are completely arbitrary and represent nothing. I have no idea why they wouldn't make it looks like the graphs above, other than it's PD and doing things illogically is their MO.

The answer can be found out by studying better what the lines mean.
Each line represents a gear; on the x axis you have car speed, on the y axis engine rpm. The yellow portion of each gear (in the bottom most chart) represents the speed/rpm range for each one by shifting gear at redline.

In GT5 gear charts it isn't clear what the shown ranges (in blue) are meant to show, since they overlap in the x axis without explanation.
The overlap means that the next gear starts at a lower speed than that of when you shifted up in the previous gear at redline. That doesn't make sense, even if you assume it to be the "potential range at all speeds".

Because there are no gears left and to attain higher speeds you have to go over the redline. But if you ask me I agree that this behavior is not really needed.

Thanks for the replies guys. Im still trying to competely understand that dum gt5 transmission chart. Its darn complecating. The charts posted in the replies are also helpful.

If its not so much ask can someone post a picture up of GT5's tranny chart and help with some dummy diagrams for me. Like exactly each thing means. If not its cool. Ill go read a gt5 for dummies book.
