Yes, it has been 2 years since a thread like this was created (I searched. :) ) Anyways, I'd just like to know now what your OS is now, If you have changed.

Right now: Windows 2000 pro for me. I had some "copyright issuses with XP pro. But if I said anything further I might get slapped in the wrist by Giles.:embarrassed: But just recently I had to format my HD because of NTFS to FAT issues on the hard drive. Got it fixed, though there was Windows ME before,
I Quickly upgraded...or downgraded. not sure though. Now im settlling with 2000 pro for the while.

Well now that my story was established, what OS (if you got a new one or still stayed the same) are you running now?

2000 Pro on my personal and work machines. I know a lot of people love XP, but in the short time I've used it, I've hated it. I love 2000's reliability and its classically attractive, intuitive interface.

I've also got a Red Hat Linux 8 box in development as a Testing web server.

XP Pro on my 1.7 ghz AMD and Mac Os 9.2.2 on an old G3 233 that is starting to show its age. Compared to OS 9, XP Pro runs rather well. Os 9 just plain crashes.

Windows XP Pro on this machine and I plan on putting Linux on my other machine as soon as I can get a hard drive for it.

OS 9? What dat? :P

I've got Panther (OS X 10.3) running on my iBook (as if nobody knew already).

XP Pro and SuSE Linux Enterprise 8 on my Work horse (Dell Laptop), XP Pro on my gaming box (XP3200+), XP Media Center on the HTPC, E-Smith (Degraded RedHat) on the WebServer, W2K server on Mother (Home file, print and Jukebox server).

At work I have.
XP Pro on a crappy P3 500 IBM.
2K on a better machine P4 1.8ghz IBM.

At home.
Win XP Pro and Win2K server (Messing around and testing, it is a domain controller and a RIS server for installing XP at the moment) on a custom P3 1.1ghz.
Win2K and Redhat Linux 8 on my daily use computer which is a P3 600 with a crapload of other stuff.

Linux is a free version of UNIX. It's actually very important as an operating system, as it's the first viable open-source OS. The open-source nature means that (a) it's free, and (b) you can customise it to do exactly whaty you want and no more. It's not helpful to the beginner though.

Not entirely true anymore Giles... Have you tried a RedHat lately ?... Heck - My mom could install RH9 if she wanted too...

I remember DL'ing an entire Linux distro with kernel and network drivers and an Apache webserver on 3 floppys.. Now THAT was not helpful :grumpy:

Yeah, but then what would she be getting? A packaged OS that is someone else's vision of how things should be. And woe betide anyone who tries to build a lean system and then add components to it!

I'm sure I'll figure it all out in the end, but at the moment I don't have the time.

With RH9 ?.. E neatly packed, easy to install OS which, in many ways, resembles your Windoze. A nice Open Office package which does whatever your M$ Office does. And in XML... A lighting fast browser for when she's DL'ing recipes.. Whatever a non gamer/programmer/nerd does with a computer..

I'm just not gonna push anything down peoples throat, but the day she asks what this Linux stuff is about.....

Isn't that what you get with a Windows flavored OS as well ?....

Yup, thereby wiping half the point of Linux out. To me, the only benefit of Linux is in its customiseability. The fact that I can run a web server on something that would struggle to run NT.

The way I see it, you really need to give me a compelling reason to move away from Microsoft products. This is because by-and-large, if you follow the instructions, then Microsoft products are extremely good. Microsoft make great applications that work really well. I think that a large part of the Linux community are using Linux because they're blinded by their hatred of Microsoft.

Oh you know... that thing that drove me out of my mind trying to put up with its daily tantrums and it's consistant behavior of somehow managing to devour itself inside out everyday just to force me to spoon feed it the kill switch. :odd: Even 8.5 never complained as much as 9 did on that computer...

Ive just always wondered...what is the best Windows OS?

Ive always thought it went like this...

1. Xp pro/home
2. 2000 pro
3. '95
4. '98
5. ME

Anyone think they could change this who would know this expirence?
