Abstract: Kazunori Yamauchi's challenge to 24 Hours of Nürburgring began with this car, and the team finished in 4th in SP8 class.
In 2009, Peter Lyon, a motoring journalist and selection committee member of "World Car Awards", proposed racing at Nürburgring, and Kazunori Yamauchi, a member of the committee, and Hideshi Matsuda, a racing driver, accepted it. They formed Team World Car Awards and entered in VLN Langstreckenmeisterschaft Nürburgring (VLN Endurance Racing Championship Nürburgring) with Lexus IS F. In the fourth round, they earned a class winner.
In 2010, the team announced that they would participated in 24 Hours of Nürburgring. They improved aerodynamics and stability of the car, and Owen Mildenhall, a motor journalist of Auto Express Magazine and ex-racing driver joined the team as an assistant driver. They entered in SP8 class and battled with mechanical and aeroparts problems, while they improved the time one lap after another until the last 2 hours. Mr. Matsuda marked the fastest lap of the team, while Mr. Yamauchi, who participated in the race for the first time, the second fastest. They finished in 59th overall, 4th in SP8 class. Considering that they started from 172nd overall, this was an astounding result.
This car has a similarity with Lexus IS F Racing Car in GT series. Perhaps the former was meant to be included, but cancelled due to a license issue or something. I hope this will be substituted for the latter.
