I'm trying to get a complete list with cars that have a special gear box in GT5. By "special" I mean something like an auto transmission, a CVT gear box or something else that behaves unusual when shifting up or down.

Here are the cars I know so far, not complete yet I guess, feel free to post additional cars/categories or correct mistakes.

All cars have to be run with the stock gear box.

Automatic Transmission:
Gearboxes that change the gears smoothly, like a real automatic transmission does.

- Jaguar S-Type R ’02
- Jaguar XKR R Performance ’02
- Mercedes-Benz SL 500 (R230) ’02
- Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG (R230) ’02
- Lexus IS F ’07
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII GT-A ’02

Half-automatic Transmission:
Basically a manual gearbox without a clutch. Behaves like an auto transmission.

- Nissan GT-R Concept (Tokyo Motor Show 2001) ’01
- Nissan GT-R Concept LM Race Car

Continuously Variable Transmission:
Gearboxes on which engine RPM don't have a fixed relationship with car speed.

- Mitsubishi CZ-3 Tarmac ’01
- Toyota Prius G ’09
- Toyota Prius TC
- Mitsubishi COLT 1.5 Sport X Version ’02
- Toyota VITZ RS 1.5 ’07*
- Daihatsu OFC-1 Concept ’07*
- Nissan Skyline Sedan 350GT-8 ’02
- Honda Insight ’99
- Honda Insight LS ’09
- Honda Jazz 1.4 DSi SE Sport ’01
- Honda Fit W ’01
- Toyota Prius G (J) ’02
- Toyota Prius G Touring Selection (J) ’03
*has simulated gears, but actually uses a CVT

Electric cars:
Cars which only have a driving and reverse mode and are electrically powered.

- Tesla Motors Roadster ’08
- GT by Citroën Concept ’08
- Mitsubishi i Concept ’03
- Mitsubishi i-MiEV ’09

Few gears:
Transmissions that have up to 3 gears only.

- Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (C1) ’54 (2)
- Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (C2) ’63 (3)
- Jensen Interceptor MkIII ’74 (3)
- Chaparral 2D Race Car ’67 (3)
- Chaparral 2J Race Car ’70 (3)
- Gran Turismo PDI Racing Kart (1)
- Gran Turismo Racing Kart Junior (1)
- Gran Turismo Racing Kart 100 (1)
- Gran Turismo Racing Kart 125 (1)

Many gears:
Transmissions that have at least 7 gears.

- Lexus IS F ’07 (8)
- Lexus IS F Race Modification ’07 (8)
- Nissan Skyline Sedan 350GT-8 ’02 (8)
- Ferrari 458 Italia ’09 (7)
- Ferrari California ’08 (7)

- Ferrari F2007 (7)
- Formula Gran Turismo (7)
- Bugatti Veyron 16.4 ’09 (7)
- BMW M5 ’08 (7)
- BMW M5 ’05 (7)

What is half-auto? Downshifts by itself?

To be honest, I don't know. The info text about the GT-R Concept Cars just says "half-automatic" (or maybe "semi-automatic", I'm not sure how to translate it exactly). It acts like an automatic transmission but the turbocharger loses no boost when you shift. Not sure if that's a difference to the automatic transmission, as all the cars with a "normal" automatic transmission have no turbochargers. Besides that there aren't differences I spotted yet.
If anyone has a more specific information about this, please post it...

corvette c1 has a 2 speed. (I think auto)
Lexus isf has a 8 speed.

Correct, both have automatic gearboxes. The Lexus was the car I forgot about but had in mind earlier.

These I know for certain have automatic stock gearboxes, as I've asked this, and answered, previously.
Jaguar XKR R Performance
Mitsubishi CZ3 Tarmac Road
Nissan Skyline Sedan 350GT-8

The Skyline doesn't actually have an automatic gearbox. It has a Extroid CVT with 8-speeds.

Toyota Vitz RS or whatever it's called. The Premium one, it has seven speed automatic which shifts like automatic (smooth changes).

Thanks for all the answers! Would've taken me some time to find these out. 👍

The Evo 7 GT-A has a 5-speed auto and the Mitsubishi Colt has a CVT.

Added.

Not sure where I should put it then?

The mercedes slr mclaren has a 5 speed automatic transmission.
Bmw z4 is a automatic too.

Sure about that? I'll have a check soon, I'm pretty sure the SLR has a gearbox acting like a manual, though it's an auto in reality.

The chaparral 2d (and possibly 2J) has a 3 speed automatic (in real life, later chaparrals had 3 pedals and none were the clutch... The third controlled the movable wing)

CVT
- Honda Insight '99
- Honda Insight '09
- Honda Jazz
- Honda Fit
- Mitsubishi i-MiEV
- Toyota Prius '02
- Toyota Prius '03
- Tesla Roadster
- All the PDI Karts

Put the Skyline under CVT. 👍

Thanks.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Will add the 2D under auto and try the 2J too. I never paid attention but I'm pretty sure the shifts are hard like a manual anyway, right?

I think some people didn't understand the question correctly. It's not just about cars that in real life have "special gear boxes", but that are "special" in GT5 as well (leaving aside that proper automatic gearbox simulation in GT5 is... very poor). Unfortunately there are plenty of cars that are supposed to have automatic gearboxes in GT5, that in the game behave exactly as if they have a manual transmission.

The Corvette C1 or the premium '07 Mustang although they're supposed to have automatic gearboxes are such examples.

In 1966, automatic transmissions were less seamless than even manuals... Chapparal was one of the first (if not the first) companies to use auto trannies in racing... Why do you think there are only 3 gears.

This is not true at all.

Differences in automatic transmissions aren't simulated in GT5 anyway. If a car supposed to be automatic behaves like a manual, it's because it's been programmed to behave like one.

Does the C1 have no soft gear changes? That's sad then... :(
I agree about the Mustang, I back-installed the stock gearbox expecting it to become an auto again, but it didn't.

Okay. So it actually behaves like a manual?

That's the way I understood it and that premium Vitz really is that way, automatic like Merc SL55 in GT5.

That's true, I remember having fun driving it like a real city car without these extreme gear changes and stuff. Same with a Suzuki Kei Car, but I don't remember which one...

The tesla and pdi carts don't use cvt's they have a single speed gearbox. It is special but in a different way.

It did in GT4, but I haven't got one in GT5 to confirm.

The premium Suzuki Cervo has "soft gear changes" too.
(It's got a CVT with simulated gears. In GT5 it appears to be working in that mode only, and not in standard CVT seamless mode).

Differences in automatic transmissions aren't simulated in GT5 anyway. If a car supposed to be automatic behaves like a manual, it's because it's been programmed to behave like one.

They do, however, model different shift times, I know this because of the clutch and flywheel upgrades.

By the way, are you also compiling a list of cars that are supposed to behave like automatics, but don't? It would be quite long. Most modern ('90-'00) cars in the game with 4-gears gearboxes have this problem. There also are some 5/6 speed auto cars that behave like manuals, but it's harder for them (unless you know beforehand) to determine which ones are supposed to be automatic and which ones manual.

Two of them are:

Toyota CALDINA GT-FOUR '02
Ford Taurus SHO '98

The tesla and pdi carts don't use cvt's they have a single speed gearbox. It is special but in a different way.

I'll make a new list for them also including the electric GT by Citroën.

It did in GT4, but I haven't got one in GT5 to confirm.

I do not have the 2D as well.

I think the Suzuki you mention is the one I was cruising in once. I really don't even remember the looks or handling of the car, only that it was a little Suzuki.

Nope. As you say, it'd be too long, and I mainly do the list for people who want to drive cars with special gear boxes and that will include everything but cars that drive like a manual... which are 95% of the range I guess.

Not Suzuki, it was Daihatsu OFC-1 Concept. It also has similiar thing, you've enlightened me :D

Edit: Maybe Suzuki Cervo has also this automatic gearbox. But I'm 95% percent sure that OFC-1 has it as well.

Edit 2: But I'm also 99% sure that BMW Z4 has a manual gearbox in GT5. Or it acts like one, but I think driver moved the shifter.

Both Premium kei cars Suzuki Cervo SR '07 and Daihatsu OFC-1 Concept have "soft gear changes" in GT5.
Both have a CVT with simulated gears in GT5 (in real life they should have a standard CVT mode as well).

Thanks for your active help guys. Added all the new information to the OP.

Could someone give me a short one-sentence description of a CVT gearbox? I need one for the OP and can't think of one myself as I don't know safely what it is myself.

Gearboxes on which engine rpm don't have a fixed relationship with car speed.

However, the OFC-1 and the Cervo have a CVT, but in GT5 they work in "sport mode" with simulated fixed gears, so in practice (in the game) they are like cars with "regular" automatic transmissions.
