I had a friend visiting me recently who is an avid photographer, I told her about the photography mode in GT5 and she asked if she could have a go.

Naturally I was fine with it, then proceeded to run a quick race since I had no replays saved.
About five minutes in she asked me why she couldn't just take a photo while other people were racing in an online lobby. Which got me wondering, is that possible and would it be something other people would be interested in?

We already have the NASCAR pitwall for taking live photos, and we have things like the Move for getting faster panning than the DS3 can manage if it was implemented.

In short - Would you be interested in taking live photos during online races by entering as a spectator?

It would work if the online mode was smoother yes. I think it's a great idea... but nevertheless you can capture the same great moments after the race on a saved replay... which does make it seem redundant.

I'm not so sure..

I've always felt something was lost when we can freeze time and take 20 years to take a photo 'just right'
There's something magical about rushing to line the shot up just right as the cars fly past

On a side note, I've never had a problem with how smooth online is, maybe you've been in rooms with low race quality? but that's off topic.

I think this is a brilliant point. Photographers are always there on the sidelines or behind the wall taking photos, they dont wait until after the event to study the film and take snippets from it, like we're doing.

I think certain sections at every track should be possible viewing locations for photography, behind walls or high above in VIP boxes or elsewhere.

Photos should only be possible from such vantage points when a live race is happening offline or online, and they should be marked as such.

Sounds great, and yes the NASCAR pit-stop might hint at it (although time still freezes when you hit the button, I think). There's a similar sort of challenge to get the aeroplane snapped before it lands at the Red Bull location, and is hindered by controls that are slow and deliberate, so that might need a tweak since not everyone has Move.

It'd add a new dimension that I'm sure lots of people would appreciate a few times and be glad it's there, whilst others would probably really relish it. You could host photo competitions alongside / within online race championships, it might even constitute practice for the real world (when it's raining, or whatever) if done well.

Imagine an element of the game where you can play taking photos. After the race, the game will save the replay for you to play back. Once the replay is selected, you are then at a specific vantage point where you can watch the cars fly by as you take pictures. Sort of like a first person shooter..but with a camera.
