I have the same problem... I really wan't the G25 becourse of the manuel transmission, good materials and the fact that I can use it for PC too. My question is just if it is just as good for GT5 Prologue as the DFGT, since theres no in-game setting for it. I'm aware of the weaker FFB, but how does the precision and/or accuracy in the G25 compare to the DF'ers in GT5? (if you forget about other benefits of both wheels - only the feeling in the wheel itself ;P)
I just need to know that Logitech G25 is just as good/precise in Gran Turismo as any other similar wheel; and I will buy it. I'm also aware of the possible upcomming G27, but if the G25 still can be compared (even with the lack of "support" of the game) I really can't wait for a new one.. ;D
As someone who was neurotic/crazy enough to have bought both the G25 and DFGT within the last 3 months (errm...yeah, I did
but I got the DFGT for under $100 at Gamestop with a few game trade-in credits
) I can offer you a little insight into the pros & cons of each wheel:
DFGT Pros:
- Excellent force feedback in GT5P-more consistent/smoother than G25
- More buttons on the wheel itself-excellent for online racing. You don't have to take your hands off the wheel to look behind you or make changes with in-race RA functions.
- PS button on the wheel so you can use it to navigate through the PS3's XMB menus
- Runs much "cooler" than the G25 as it has only one FFB motor compared to the G25's two motors. I could be wrong, but it's bound to be cheaper on your energy bill as a result.
- Excellent grip/feel in your hands
- Fewer cords than the G25= tidier setup
- +/- $100 or more cheaper than the G25
DFGT Cons:
- Paddle shifters are a little hard to reach if you have small hands, and they don't make as much of a pronounced "clicking" sound as the G25, so it is a bit easier to miss/make a late shift with them
- The pedals are "just okay" in quality. Nowhere near the feel and quality of the G25 pedals for example.
G25 Pros:
- Passes the "look" test right out of the box.
- Extemely well-made (or so it seems to me, as quite a few people have had mechanical failure issues with it, just scan the forums and you can see for yourself)
- The paddle shifters are excellent compared to the DFGT.
- The pedals are better than the DFGT by orders of magnitude IMO
- You have the option of using an H-Pattern shifter and clutch on most of the cars in GT5P, enhancing the "real-driving simulator" experience.
G25 Cons:
- The clutch/H-pattern shifter do not work as they should in GT5P in my opinion. It's far too easy to miss a shift, and the shifter itself is not very solid or sturdy feeling. So unless you just enjoy cruising around while using it, I wouldn't recommend it for online racing as it's too easy to miss a shift, which at places like the hairpin exit at Suzuka can easily cost you half a second.
- The force feedback has definite "dead zones" meaning the feedback is not 100% consistent in GT5P, unlike the DFGT.
- The button layout/configuration is a bit more convoluted/difficult compared to the DFGT. For example, you will most certainly have to take your hand off of the wheel during races if you plan on using the in-race adjustment function, or even to look-back if you use the two red buttons on the wheel for the look right/look left function (as you should for online racing, if you want to be a clean, courteous driver )
As another anecdotal piece of evidence in support of the DFGT,
here is an account from one of the better drivers in the GT5P "universe" who made the switch from the G25 to the DFGT and swears by it.
Here is a thread that will also answer a lot of other questions you may have about choosing a wheel. There are countless other threads as well that may help you. Just take your time and look around
My advice would be this: if you can possibly do it, just hold off on buying a G25 and wait for the G27 that should be coming out soon. In the meantime, save yourself about $100 dollars and buy the DFGT if you have to have a wheel now (and I would recommend buying the wheel, best purchase you will ever make 👍 ). If money is not a concern, and you have a little patience, I would further recommend buying one of the
Fanatec line of PS3 compatible wheels along with Clubsport Pedals. They are more expensive than the G25, and you may have to wait a few months to actually receive it, but based on what I am seeing, reading and hearing from other people who have bought it, it is well worth the wait and the extra money, as it provides better force feedback than the G25 and the Clubsport pedals are better than the G25 pedals by a good margin--and that's saying quite a bit
It's been my experience that I run pretty much identical lap times with either the DFGT or G25. So in retrospect, I really wish I had just bought the DFGT to begin with and saved the extra +/- $140 difference in wheel prices
Hope this helps. I'm going to shut up now
