If I recall correct (most likely no) the second seat is part of the regulations in LMP - and is a link back in history from back when you actually HAD your mechanic in the car..

A space for a second driver is required on all Prototype cars, but they usually just have electronics sitting in them. The Lola has two rollbars because of new safety regulations and making it more easily compatible for both ACO and FIA specs (FIA required the rollbar go over both driver seats, ACO only requires it over the actual driver.

They used to have mechanic's in the Indy 500 but I didnt know they still do that in racing.
