Lonesome George is DEAD

Lonesome George, the last remaining tortoise of his kind and a conservation icon, has died of unknown causes, the Galapagos National Park said.

He was thought to be about 100 years old.

Lonesome George was found in 1972 and had become a symbol of Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, which attracted some 180,000 visitors last year.

"This morning the park ranger in charge of looking after the tortoises found Lonesome George, his body was motionless," the head of the Galapagos National Park, Edwin Naula said. "His life cycle came to an end."

He died this morning 25/06/2012 We shall all remember him with respect.

Good to see people care about this. I posted this in the gt5 questions and answers but a moderator said he might lock that post I made for Lonesome George because its in the wrong section. :(

Perhaps that's because dead, sorry, DEAD tortoises have nothing to do with GT5. 💡

True but people appreciated the post and then he blocked it >:( He did not need to do that.
Yes, he did as it was off topic.

GT5 posts go in the GT5 forums. Posts about a current event, that is not a GT5 event, go here.

Now, you'd be well advised to drop it and get back on topic. 💡

What's worse is they are thought to be able to live to 200, so in fact he died middle aged which is really sad. I hope they thoroughly checked that he wasn't just sleeping or something!! :scared:

RIP George :(

It greatly saddens me when another species goes extinct, because it's usually caused by Humans.

In memory of the last of its kind, 1912-2012. It's always a bummer to see another species go extinct, to be never brought back again. If only we could prevent extinction of other species some how.

I was literally just reading about him about two days ago and then last night I found out he had died. Very sad news. :(

Lonely,
He was so lonely,
He had nobody,
To call his own.

Sadly being only one left of his kind means no hope left.

Sad news.

Didn't they find a bunch of Tortises on an island that they think are or contain DNA of his species?

We could. But we're to lazy and greedy as a species.

I found it depressing to name the tortoise "Lonesome". That already suggests people have already given up on George, so to be sad about it now is fairly silly.

Well they tried to reproduce him with a species that similar to him three times. Sadly 0% of the eggs hatched.

It's probably because he needed / wanted a female tortoise of his own kind. Poor guy all alone with no others like him around.
