looking back to the past...

After becoming a GT4 addict and having been a GT3 addict, going back to the past was really hard. The physics felt sort of mushy and artificial, way too grabby; graphics weren't as crisp and clean, cars in garage weren't available stock in arcade, and only 260 cars, many of which were unobtainable with only one memory card and an inexcusible amount of play time; no B-spec Bob to do endurance races for you...
I miss the complex string and Smokey mountain though. And the other Tahiti courses. And the FC-3S RX-7 Savanna, the supra in yellow, the insane number of paint variations of white and silver on many cars, being abe to mod a Skyline to 1000hp, an Escudo to 2000hp, arcade mode had its own progression, Trial Mountain was narrower, twistier, and had more road markings; good times...
Going back and playing it suprised me, though; in the arcade mode, on the arcade cars, you could actually select a drift setting. I was like WTF mates? And then I remembered how when I was younger I had no idea what "drift" meant. When I play it now, it doesn't even feel like drifting (compared to GT4). It doesn't feel loose enough; you're not at the limit of control. However, atleast it doesn't over-calculate understeer like in GT4.
I remember seing a two-page screenshot of GT3 in GamePro and being amazed; I thought it was a real photo. It got straight 5's from GamePro. GT4? 5's in everything except fun factor 4.5. They said it was too hard to steer compared to the old one. Oh well. It's time to move on. Post your moments of reminiscing here, too.

I was just playing GT3 a bit earlier. It was good times. Turning out laps on Trial Mountain and Tokyo with that little bit of sliding that GT3 would always let you get away with was awesome. Oh, and the soundtrack. I still know all the dang songs from that game. Ninety-nine red balloons float into the summer sky...

i play gran turismo 3 more than GT4 coz GT3 loads faster,u can get around faster, menus etc,i dont have time to sit and really play GT4 anymore,so right now GT3 is perfect for me,brings back memorys to and on my save i still got 2003 records etc,all good.

The past is still the present to me. I'm at 75% completion on GT3 and just started GT4. The controls seem real mushy and sluggish on GT4. Maybe I haven't got my Madcatz wheel set up right for GT4 or maybe the Madcatz just ain't going to cut it for GT4. I do like being able to move through the menus in GT3 with relative speed. I seem to waste lots of time in GT4 just navigating around.

Hey have you gone into the settings menu and removed the ASC and TCS? Your experience sounds like mine--I kept getting all mooshy in the corners in my Infiniti G20. At first I thought it was because needed an oil change, but the next morning it dawned on me to try and find out if the stability & traction controls were on automatically like they are in GT3.

Can relate here. Still at 99.2% in GT3, and 68.6% in GT4. ReaLLY must get back and finish. I preffered the ease of menu surfing in GT3, it was sequential, and seemed to have a greater degree of logic. Although, i have to say, i have enjoyed the hunting around in GT4 menu, uncovering little gems such as the fully worked vehicles which can be bought in the tuning shop. I enjoyed the rally driving more, you seemed to have a greater degree of control over the car, whereas in GT4 i have found the rally events in Special Conditions almost impossible to do unless i try and barrel through with a fully overpowered car ( although the car seems to have more realistic handling and is easier to control in the license tests than the SC events). It just seems that there is no grip whatsoever in the Rally events. Really pisses me off. Loved Smoky Mountain in GT3, that is one track i could drive all day. A nice smooth track for some good, fast rallying.

Another aspect about GT3 which i preferred was that i was able to use nearly all of the cars won as prizes in other events, whereas there are some totally useless machines which come up as prizes in GT4 that have no use whatsoever, and are unable to even be sold, which makes them totally pointless and valueless, in my honest opinion. At least let me fully work the Daimler Benz Motor Wagons so i can take them for a blat around the "ring. :D

I still run both GT3 & GT4. I occasionally blat GT2 - which takes some technique adjustment coming back from the newer games.

I like the trouble-free handling on GT3. Strange, but as a game it seems just a little crisper to me than GT4. GT4 has awesome graphics and great handling once you get used to it, but GT3 seems to... I don't know, just drive nicer. The cars are so easy to handle. I only use DS2 (too stingy to buy a DFP just yet), but I have fun.

I've completed GT3 once and am at about 35% second time through. This time I took the quick route: Esperante -> 787B -> Polyphony and onwards.
Still going through GT4 - getting the enduros out the way and playing with the black beauties...

Yup, GT3 is still the present for me, too. I'm taking it nice & slow..about halfway thru the pros now. I tried GT4 and I liked it a lot, but I wanna wait till GT3 is finished. Again, agreed about the way cars handle.

GT1-weird handling. There's often too much of this and not enough of that, so the cars drive blocky and unrealistic. But the cool thing about GT1 is your suspension settings make a huge difference in car handling.

GT2-The easiest so far as handling & settings go, BUT downforce is another matter entirely. I think it's way more effective in GT2 than in GT3. For instance if you follow another car into a corner in GT2, you'd better brake EARLY otherwise you'll understeer massively, cause you have lost most of your downforce! But in GT3 it doesn't matter if you're behind another car or not...generally I've noticed you still have a lot of downforce yet.

GT3: not as realistic and anal as GT4, but a bit better than GT2.

Yes, I recently discovered this. It's amazing how much those slow you down. I think it's a more dramatic change than in GT3. I was doing the lightweight cup in the Abarth and picked up a whole bunch of speed and handling just by backing those down. Thanks Much!

Aint it the truth? They had ASC and TCS in GT2 remember? They cost $50,000 EACH! Not only that, but these devices seemed ineffectual...you'd still burn your tires for instance even if you had TCS on 50. In GT3 the stability & traction definitely make more of a difference, and in GT4 they're insane. After I removed them all the sudden the game felt 100% better to me.

Come and think of it, this guy at work was recently complaining that GT3 had way too much understeer and he never got past the Sunday Cup. I'll bet he never turned that crap off.

I reckon GT3 is more fun than GT4, more like an arcade racer than a sim.
I still like to drive around on GT3 for fun though.

Waffle911 mentioned the drift settings, I've always used the drift setting instead of the race setting cause I felt it was looser that way.
Now I know what its actually for and its a hell of a lot more fun.

On the fun meter, I'd say GT2 rates 8 out of 10 for me. GT3 is a 6, only because it has less cars and some of these pro-level races have my palms sweating & heart racing! So even tho I rate it a 6, on the adrenaline meter I rate it a 9!
