Yes folks it's another member bothering you for advice about which car to buy (yayyyyyyyy)

Right so I lied the new car isn't for me, it's for my mother (she will leave me the duck)or atleast that is the plan which I might change but either way I'll be driving both the duck and the new car so I want to make sure that we get the choice right.

What the hell is the duck?

Glad you asked, unless you didn't then I'll show you anyway

she is no 2.2 camry but she'll be mine.

anyway I live in a 2.5 world country prices here are idiotic and I can't tell you the exact range in US dollars but anyway the search has been narrowed to a few candidates, a few AUTOMATIC ones.

Ford Fiesta 1.6 with 105BHP
Hyundai IX-20 125 BHP
Hyundai i30
VW Polo 1.4 85 BHP
Kia Rio
Kia Soul

Yes all of those are indeed cold hatches (because they are not hot, get it? ) and they all are slow and average cars but which one is better do you feel.

Priorities are for it to be safe, reliable, not really expensive to maintain and preferably a decent balance of speed and MPGs .

So there you have it folks, I call on the wisdom of you guys to help us out.

Edit: if you have an alternative suggestion feel free to post.

Hyundai i30's probably the nicest on that list, not sporty but otherwise a very nice car. Might be more expensive to run than the others, though. The Fiesta is definitely worth a look, the Euro market model has had heaps of praise for the way it drives, and it's practical and affordable.

Interesting, didn't consider the i30 much but will do now, Fiesta looks promising aswell it's the cheapest aswell but one of the least powerful.

How about the Mazda Demio/2 ?

Not available here sadly.

I'm quite partial to the Rio on that list - for me, it's as good a car as the Fiesta, it just does things differently. Fiesta feels light and fun but has a nasty interior, the Rio has the much nicer cabin but isn't quite as peppy on the road.

I'd not heard of an ix20 but it turns out it's Hyundai's version of the Kia Venga (Hyundai's equivalent to the Rio is the i20 by the way - not as nice to look at but largely similar). Ditto i30 and Cee'd. Really, any of those cars do the job pretty well.

The Polo feels nice and solid, so there's little wrong with that. And Opel has finally dragged the Corsa up as a half-decent product these days, but frankly it's the worst on that list.

Yeah I think the Corsa is probably the least favorable option, the Rio's price is really competitive, never seen the Fiesta's interior so that's a big negative, this changes things now.

If you had to choose one, which one would you go for, the Rio? and what's a good alternative to the Rio

Really the Fiesta is the best alternative to the Rio, or the Hyundai i20 if that's available there (may be called something different). The Fiesta's interior isn't terrible, it just has a bit of a contrived design which isn't as nice to use as the Kia's interior.

Noted, thanks alot

Love your sense of humour, Mate !
Anyway I would recommend a newer Nissan Sunny/ Tiida or the Micra/ March since you already experienced with Nissans, Or the Kia Rio, since it's a good looking i30, And I believe Hyundais are popular there in Egypt for a reason, right?

Thanks EL Fayce

A Tiida is an option but I like a more fun car, yep Hyundais are very popular each because of their price and how good they've become, will no doubt have a look at the i30

Go for the Fiesta. It's a little heavier than the 2/Demio (which I own) but it's quite literally the same platform. They are riotous amounts of fun with even just their meager 100hp. You won't regret it. I would never describe by 2 as anything less than a 'warm' hatch. (Remember the original hot hatch, the VW GTI, only had 100hp as well, although it undercut even my flyweight 2 by 400lbs or so)

As a Hyundai owner, I'd say the i30 is the way to go
reliable, easy and cheap to maintain, and great on gas.

Sorry guys was away on Holiday.
Does your mother drift a lot?

Don't they all?

I really did not give the i30 anythought at all and the funny thing is 2 years ago we were really thinking about getting one, such a shame it's more expensive now but both me and my mother are fans of it so will no doubt go check it out again.

Try BMW e36 325i coupe, those with 147kw. :) rwd - bunch of fun!

I actually got offered a Lanica Integrale to buy but since it's for my mother and she wants to be a first owner of a car for once in her life sadly we need a first hand car.

Is there any possibility of getting a RWD car within budget?

Fun fact, all these cars are somewhere between 130-160 thousand egyptian pounds, something like the BRZ is 300+

Yeah but in the Past like Jeremy Clarkson said time was slower :P

the Fiesta is my favorite on paper, seems to be the most fun.

Also guys it appears that a Manual is out of the question so the gearbox needs to be as less bad and sluggish as possible.

Is there some law against used cars where you live or does your mother not trust a used car?

No  she just never was a first owner of a car before and wants to be this time, I'd guess there is a little element of a lack of trust for used cars thrown in there aswell.

Sometimes one gets sick of driving something old and pre-abused.

previous car had very little miles on it, before that we only had one car for the family so although the 94 Toyota Corolla was bought new, my dad was the first owner.

So yeah a rather lame story.

What about this?

It's as competent as anything else on the list, but a bit more fun.

Is it fun? always thought of it otherwise (felt it is a tad big), that is added to the list now and is within budget, the "different" shape might be an issue but the Soul is now a priority 👍

Edit: since this car hasn't got any responses it could be named differently elsewhere so here is the IX-20

Hyundais nowadays are really a decent choice. I only drove a diesel i30 and it felt really nice, decent interior materials for such a car, drives nicely and personally I find them to be one of the best looking of their segment. Not sure about the automatic transmission but you always can take it for a testdrive, plus, atleast here, Hyundais come with a 5 year warranty or so. Would.

Interesting, I like the i30 and Hyundais are cheap to run.

my mother has a bad a leg and she is a bit old :D so Manual in this traffic is impossible.

In that case I'd almost say just go with whichever one has the firmest, fastest shifts and the most immediate, unsmoothed throttle response (torque converter stall speeds might have something to do with that as well). If no paddle-shifters are available you might be able to use the low-gear selections and overdrive-off button to drive it like a manual anyway, though that depends on whether those features are available on your car.
