Alright I have heard all good and bad things about caffeine/soda/energy drink/coffee. I am looking for a factoid sheet (or at least a compilation) of trustworthy notes on what is good and bad about these addictive supplements.

The main outcome I want to get to is that...well, should we consume any of the forementioned above?

e.g. Any of the above is bad for your kidneys
e.g. Coffee can brown your teeth
e.g. Caffeine can lead to heart problems

Those are thoughts but I do not know if those are facts...

I am seeking for answers, GTP. Please come to my aid.

You can consume it, it's just a case of moderating what you consume.

Keep an eye on sugar levels in sodas and energy drinks as they can be very high in some. Coffee does brown your teeth but you'd have to be a regular drinker of it (say quite often every day, not sure how much though I'd imagine a few though), brushing your teeth regularly should minimalise the effects of it. Caffeine can raise blood pressure as it's a stimulant, this isn't too much of a problem unless you are a heavy drinker (dozens of cups of Coffee a day).

Don't go mad on the types of drinks mentioned as it can cause problems but you'd have to be quite heavy with it. Also it can depend upon if you've had kidney/heart problems before, if for example you're heavily obese drinking large ammounts of caffeine or things that contain high ammounts of sugar would have more of an effect than on someone who is phsyically and medically good.

Are you in the UK or elsewhere? If you are in the UK you should be able to get some good information through places like NHS Direct, your doctor, your hospital, etc.

I find when I drink about 4/5 cans of Vodka/Redbull my heart beat in the morning is terrible. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack. I had to stop drinking it in the end as I was getting worried.

It isn't a matter of what, rather how much. <sip Mountain Dew>

Anything in moderation is fine and can have positive affects on your body, however too much of anything can be deadly. Heck, even too much water will kill you.

So, for these drinks it won't kill you to have one or two in teh morning to give you a boost or just to help become alert. Drinking a gallon a day will most definitely cause you to lose potasium levels, become dehydrated, have kidney problems and irregular heart beats. Too much caffeine (it woudl have to be in a pure form to get this much in your system at once) can give you a straight up heart attack.

Think of caffeine or any other product you put in your body like you would any kind of medicine. You won't take a whole bottle of Tylenol, no matter how bad the head ache is.

It is all about moderation.

I just need a bit more reliable information on kidney stones and caffeine-soda...(the reason I ask is that I'd rather hear from first or second hand [aka a friend] experience or at least a study someone knows is factual)

Oh noes! Ban deadly dihydrogen monoxide!

Well...

Or I can tell you that in college my brother would drink multiple pots of coffee daily and wound up with a kidney stone that the doctor attributed to his coffee usage. He cut back and it got better.

Then of course a couple of months ago he has been back on a huge coffee kick, but tries to avoid any other forms of caffeine and drinks mostly water otherwise, so instead of kidney stones he developed an irregular heartbeat.

I imagine it could depend greatly on the individual. If you drink a lot of them and developed kidney stones your doctor would be most likely to tell you what it could be.

Factoid: NOS Energy drink is actually quite good. It's got about 2000mg of Taurine in it. :D

No, it actually does.
And 348mg of Caffeine (I believe an average cup of coffee has 100mg, if memory serves). It kinda tastes like grapefruit pop. It's damned expensive, though. As such, I don't drink it often.

It has 200mg, which is still more than other energy drinks. Coffee can have anywhere from 115mg to 150mg

This is kind of neat. how much coke can kill you? or other drinks.

I was mistaken with the figures I quoted last night...
According to the bottle, it's got 343mg Caffeine, and some 2700mg of Taurine.
It's not in the can, it's a small bottle.
