Firstly, I think a thread devoted to Open source stuff would be sweet. You can get all kinds of stuff out there that is completely free and often just as good as expensive programs. For instance, I've got Paintdotnet for photo editing, LMMS for music, Super (C) for audio/video conversion and some other useful things.

But anyway, I'm looking for some good video editing software.
Something that allows me to do more than Windows Movies Maker.
I honestly doubt there's one that rivals After effects or Vegas or whatever...
I also run Ubuntu, and have tried a couple programs on there to no avail. Cinelerra being one of them, I honestly could not get it to do anything. I've no idea what codecs it supported or why I couldn't make it render into any usable format. Something a little more user-friendly would be cool. I prefer Windows simply because it means I don't have to move my stuff over or fiddle with not being able to access windows-only programs while I use Ubuntu.

I've done searches many times, most anything that looks promising is either wildly outdated, not free, doesn't work, or looks really fishy.

I'm obviously not looking to pirate anything, maybe people just use the expensive stuff because there's just nothing else good in this department...
