In the fall of 2010, Lotus began an ambitious undertaking by putting together a effort to race its Evora. Dubbed the Evora GTE, it was designed to directly compete against the likes of rivals Ferrari and Porsche in international races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Heading up the development of the first Lotus GT machine since the 1999 Lotus Elise GT1 was the Lotus Motorsport team headed by Italian engineer Nicola Scimeca. The lightweight and strong bonded-aluminum monocoque chassis in the road car would form the basis for the competition machine with room in the regulations to modify the production suspension to suit the particular needs of circuit racing. A more aggressive body was constructed, made entirely from carbon fiber composites. Cosworth were drafted in to tune the Toyota-sourced engine. The V6 was enlarged to just under four litres and fitted with dry-sump lubrication. Breathing through the mandatory restrictors, it churned out about 470 bhp. It would be mated to an XTrac six-speed sequential gearbox and installed transversely in the aluminum chassis. In January 2011, Austrian team JetAlliance Racing were announced as the official partner of Lotus for the Evora GTE's maiden season. Two cars were entered in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC), which featured all the major endurance races including the Sebring 12 Hours and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This car's addition would bring a current Lotus Competition car as well as a another GT2/GTE class car.
