Lotus Tuning help

Hey whats up everybody. I just got a Lotus, the 108,000, i'm not exactly sure what model. but anyways, right now its kicking out just below 1000 horsepower. i have the trans so i have more top end but do you think i should get a stage down turbo so my tires last longer? on the 4th lap they are almost red and its so hard to control after that. thanks.

Welcome to GTP, infinitemethod! In a word, YES, get rid of some horespower. Most of the race-built cars in GT3 start to overpower their chassis around 900hp, and it's just worse for a built-out street car. I would run it around 600 hp tops.

What tires are you using? What race series?

medium i'm pretty sure. that car just doesn't seem to handle well at all. plus it doesn't help that i don't know how to tune the suspension right or the brakes for that matter. but its all good. i will keep messin with it.

What does it do? As a mid-engine car, I find the Lotus 350 to handle pretty well. Like all MR cars it tends to steer with the throttle as much as the wheel, but once you know that, they are easy to hustle around.

9 times out of 10 I find that general complaints about cars not handling mostly come from drivers who brake too late and overcook the turns. In general, you want to be almost done braking by the time you turn in. Then accelerate as you hit the apex of the turn. With an MR car, get on and off the throttle as you turn to adjust the line. Lifting throttle will tighten the turn and giving it gas will open it up a little. Stay in a low-ish gear so your revs are in the midrange and throrrle response is quick.

If you have the racing suspension on the car, go to the Change Parts screen and uninstall the race suspension, and reinstall it. This will put the settings back to stock. Then go to the Settings screen, lower the ride height by 20% and make the springs 20% stiffer. Drive the car that way for a while, remembering what I said above, and try to work with it. Then come back and tell me what it's doing and we'll talk about how to fix it.

It's the Lotus Esprit V8. I think i'm pretty good on the whole breaking before the turn and I understand that you start to acc. when you get to the apex. basically on all the straight aways i just kill the other racers and by the time i get back around to the big straight those guys are gaining on me quite a bit. maybe i just need a different car?

What series are you in? If tire wear is on, that means you're in Amateur somewhere, I assume. Who are the competition and what are the tracks?

What kind of lap times are you posting? In the Lotus 350, pushing about 527 hp, I can get around SS R11 in under 2 minutes, and I'm not a great driver by any means. I haven't used the car much if anywhere else, but I can take a crack at it if you wish for a benchmark.

I think the best bet is to do as I recommend above: cut the power back to 600 or so, reset the suspension, and concentrate on your cornering practice. Maybe switch to T4 or T3 tires so they will be still yellow-orange by the end of the race.
