What are your thoughts on lyrical content in a song ? Is it or can it be used as a crutch by some just to say "I heard it in a song and that's what persuaded me to do .......... " ? I / we hear this a lot, I'm not buying it. I personally think that people who do use this have other issues and are using musical content as a way out to make themselves look good.

Let's look at some lyric lines and judge for ourselves :

The Doors - they did a song called "The End". In it are the following lyrics ...

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again

Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land

Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby

Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold

The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest

The blue bus is callin' us
The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us

The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to... 🤬 you

C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
C'mon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

Does something like this want to make you go out and commit what is being sung about ? I think not.

This one,by Garth Brooks, "The Thunder Rolls"

Three thirty in the morning
Not a soul insight
The city's lookin' like a ghost town
On a moonless summer night
Raindrops on the windshield
There's a storm moving in
He's headin' back from somewhere
That he never should have been
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

Every light is burnin'
In a house across town
She's pacin' by the telephone
In her faded flannel gown
Askin' for miracle
Hopin' she's not right
Prayin' it's the weather
That's kept him out all night
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls
And the lightnin' strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

She's waitin' by the window
When he pulls into the drive
She rushes out to hold him
Thankful he's alive
But on the wind and rain
A strange new perfume blows
And the lightnin' flashes in her eyes
And he knows that she knows
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls

And the lightnin' strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

She runs back down the hallway
To the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol
Kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror
He won't do this again
Cause tonight will be the last time
She'll wonder where he's been

So by listening to this song, does it make you want to go out and cheat ? Again, I think not. This type of content ranges across the board, it is in every genre of music. So forget about pointing a finger at just Rock and Roll, it's everywhere.

Next comes the parenting factor. Should parents limit what their children listen to ? Regardless of what the parent may say, the kid is going to hear this somewhere. On the radio, at their friends house, YouTube, wherever. They will download it, put it on their MP3,download it to their phone, and the parents will not even know. I'm not saying that a kid should go out and do this.As a parent, you can only contain it to a degree, not stop it entirely. I have to agree with a rating system on CD's. Some stuff just should not be heard by younger ears. However, at what age does a parent "lift off" of their child and allow such content to be heard ?

Can the music industry really be blamed ? Or does the problem stem from the home, or any type of psychological problems with the child ?

Thoughts ?

Nope, no more than reading a murder mystery makes me want to go out and kill something, or reading a book by an anarchist makes me want to go out and blow up government buildings.

Trying to blame one's actions on what one has heard in song lyrics is a cop-out. Yeah, it's been tried even as a legal defense, but it's still a cop-out.

Nice, yet how many time does an author or book publisher get railed because the person says ..... "I read it in a book" . Your exactly right BobK, it's a cop out, and artists / musicians take the rap (no pun intended) for it.
