Illusion Softworks is developing a follow-up to the 2004 gangland crime game Mafia.

Set in the 1940s and 1950s, Mafia 2 will feature "high octane gunplay with white knuckle driving and an engaging narrative," according to a press release by publisher 2K Games.

"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."

Illusion, based in Prague, Czech Republic, developed the original Mafia game and is also responsible for the Hidden and Dangerous and Vietcong series.

Mafia 2 is being developed for PC and "next-generation consoles," 2K said, but no specific platforms were mentioned.

All I can say is sweet. I just hope that this time they are working on it for real and actually release it.

Mafia was/is such a great game, I always have been hoping their would be a sequel.

Well now this game is almost heading out for the stores, it will be released on 24th of August in the US and on the 27th in Europe.

I am a bit surprised not to see more posts about Mafia II on the forums, especially since the first one was awesome in terms of driving and realism, at least for its time.

Furthermore the environments in Mafia II looks terrific, and I can not wait to just drive around enjoying the scenery.

There really should be more games that focus on a realistic approach to driving in urban environments, and by that I mean, no racing, rally etc just casual driving, I am genuinly surprised that it has been, and continues to be overlooked by developers, I actually think while it would not be a huge market, then at least it believe it would be bigger then many devlopers would initially think. Many gamers in our generation starts to become "old" ;) now and look for something outside the action packed content.

Actually the above mentioned paragraph is the primary reason why I still play Mafia I today, due to the driving and the city of "Lost Heaven".

Supposedly the driving in Mafia II is very good, meaning they have placed some real weight/heft to the 40's and 50's vehicles that we can use and the game also comes with an "arcade" and "simulation" mode. I can not wait to try it out. :)

hmmm, I like the setting and I think it's a great demo but it just has that same hint of last generation that Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway had in the sense it would have been world beating had it been released a year or more ago.

Still, It's a good game and I think I shall be purchasing it :)

Mafia II demo is out
Queued for DL. I like all sandbox games so I am looking forward to checking this out. The gameplay videos looked good and they reminded me of The Godfather games. Hopefully I will have the time to try this out tonight.

Just did the demo, really liked it. They got the vibe totally right, seems to also be a story driven game, which will better for me personally.

It was not really on my list of games that i wanted to buy this year but this demo has made me chance my mind.

:)

The first one was quite a bit more linear than a GTA game, but I also enjoyed it more.

You can download the PC demo through Steam.

Tomorrow for everyone on psn

darn it's great
Driving is so cool.
Got 10 min freerom in the city.

Ps: When you exit your house there's a nice convertible on the street

It's not quite as good i was hoping, but with aim-assist it offers more of a challenge than GTA IV and the destructable environments are good.

Only real negatives are the central-axis cars handling and the lack of multiplayer.

I like how much you can interact with the environments and the how destructible everything is. Car handling was pretty good depending on the car you were driving (typical for any sandbox game). Cover can be a bit clunky at times. The game reminds me of The Godfather. Fairly fun demo and will be worth a rental.

Just tried this out, I think it's absolutely brilliant!. It's like a cooler version of GTA.

Once I completed the demo mission, I spent some time just exploring the area of the city we get, it's a really nice looking place, the cars and soundtrack are great. Also, something I noticed earlier was how interactive the environment and the public are, I pulled out my gun at the gas station and then left, I come back a few minutes later and the police are there taking a statement, I walk in and the guy says 'thats him!'. Then the cops shot me.

If I can afford it, I will be buying this game.👍

Err, was this thread really released in 2007, it took 3 years for a demo to come out? Lolwut?

I may download it depending on the download size.

The game is coming out towards the end of the month. I created the thread when there was a decent confirmation that the game might actually make it. Before that there was a bunch of "it's in the plans, but not really".

Just finished up the Demo, It was lots of fun. Probably will buy this one. I did play the First Mafia and I enjoyed it. I found two of the five "Magazine" collectables 👍 Want to go back and explore the city although they only give you 10min to do so in the Demo. I found the gun store and picked up a shotgun and some ammo:tup: The Tommy Gun is a lot of fun also.

The first Mafia game was brilliant. You need to download the demo! Mafia II is definitely a 'Buy' for me.

Yeah me too. I didn't know if Kane and Lynch 2 or Mafia 2.

definitly Mafia2!!

And i heard the single player in K&L2 will be pretty short. I can spend ages in Mafia. i reinstalled the first mafia on my pc some months ago and still looking great.

If you have a good Pc that should be the platform, got some real nice physics (for exemple on cloths ...)

I think the shooting mechanics feel clunky, and judging by the map size and detail, the sandbox elements will probably appear dated compared to most modern sandbox games. However, speaking as a huge Mafia 1 fan, this will be a definite purchase as it's still a hoot to play and from the little trailer at the end of the demo the story and missions look brilliant too.

I will buy it when I get back from holidays. I love the demo. People, Mafia 2 is not your next free roaming game. It will be very scripted with beautifull cut scenes and dialogs. A game to be enjoyed on your own while zipping whisky in the evening.

Everyone who likes gangster movies will buy this game.
