Manufacturer & Processor Reccomendations

Hi folks....

i need a new laptop....i got £1,000 ($1,700 USD)

whats important is not a particular brandname....but i need reliability above all else...

it doesnt need to have the latest wifi, bluetooth technologies or dvd-writers...

i am looking at a Centrino based system....about 1 to 1.5GHz with a cdwr and floppy....14 inc screen 256 ram etc....nothing flashy..

any suggestions....i heard Toshiba make the most reliable laptopns and indeed i have an old Tosh P1 for 5 years and its never let me down....but i havent used it for a long time now....my Tiny laptop is dead and i need a new one...

IBM tinkpads are reliable....what about other?

what are your experiences?

i have had bad experiences with Sony Vaio....

I would say to steer clear of Compaq Evo laptops. Our client uses them, and I think they're rubbish. Thinkpads are very good.

Dells are also pretty good, but they actually tend to be quite heavy. Steer clear of subnotebooks unless serious portability is required, because subnotebooks tend to have poor keyboards and be more fragile.

It's probably worth paying money for an on-site warranty.

Could I ask here...what is so good about the Centrino processors compared to the regular ones in laptops?

I have a Toshiba, it's pretty good if you can get them at a good price...I got ripped off for the one I got two years ago. :|

i have never used a centrino laptop but from what i am led to believe it is the most portable processor that still delivers multimedia capabilities...

it runs in the 800MHz - 1.5 GHz range in order to reduce power and prevent heavy battery drain....which is good enough for 99% of applications....its a dedicated laptop processor...

i dont know much about the reliability though...
