Marvel's Ant-Man (Starring Thomas The Tank Engine)

.....Out of all the Marvel films, this one and Doctor Strange intrigues me the most. You could include the Guardians of Galaxy too, if this thread went up last year!

Ant Man, beside the daft name, is pretty much a difficult sell, the way I see it - "ohhh look honey I shrunk a superhero!!" - but the involvement, and the subsequent exit of Edgar Wright really got the hooks in me.

In other words, I just wanna find out if this will be the first big Marvel turkey.

....That is all.

I've seen it since Christmas around here. Every time I stop and think the poster got stolen for a few seconds.

Coming hot off the disappointment that was Avengers 2: Electric Boogaloo, Marvel surpasses almost everyone's expectations with a film that is absolutely nothing like what the trailer seemed to indicate that it was. Moreover, they made a damn movie that was fun - something that's overall been missing (aside from Guardians). Paul Rudd brings the kind of cheeky acting that has largely been reserved for RDJ, and well, PrattPratt. Too much snark in the forthcoming Civil War I suppose, but, man, I couldn't be happier with this movie.

...And the references. OH GOD THE REFERENCES.

More or less, the movie knows that it is a piece in an ever-growing puzzle, and it fights in nicely with what's been established both in the movies, and in the TV shows. It gets me particularly excited for the next season of both Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - and it should certainly fit in nicely with what's being built with the Defenders properies over on Netflix. But, really, the movie is a stepping stone film in much the same way that Thor 2 was a few years back. It expands the scope of what's going on, while also adding in new elements to the established universe. I'm so, so, so excited for what's coming up thanks to this film.

Just, uh, don't tune out at the end.

This. So much this. That second stinger was a big surprise.

Feel the same way as you: such a fun movie. It won't put an end to the criticisms of Marvel having weak, one-note villains (Loki excepted), but it was a great ride. I enjoyed it more than Ultron, absolutely.

@YSSMAN @SlipZtrEm @GTboyz

Now you have me excited. I was also disappointed with Ultron. So hearing Ant Man is better, has me very intrigued. I will have to watch this now for sure. Thanks for the follow up.

I'd say it's more in line with Guardians with regards to its comedy. It is, however, much smaller in scope than most of the movies we've seen in Phase 2. It's actually very close to Thor 1 in that sense. Everything (bar one quick cameo-friendly mission) takes place in the same basic locale.

It's not really a criticism, since Ultron took it too far the other way, but after Cap 2, Guardians, and the Avengers explored the world, this more focused approach might rub people the wrong way.

Oh, and this thread's title is even more apt than originally expected. :D

I just saw the movie. 10/10. Right to the point. No corniness about any bit. Straightforward storytelling. Good comedy. Seamless graphics. Excellent set ups for the next movies.

I saw it over the weekend. I was very happy with it. I definitely enjoyed it more than Age of Ultron. It was a lot of fun, but there was one moment:

Poor Antony!

They did leave us with a few more questions than answers going forward, but the more I think about it the more it seems to relate to the backstory and the stuff we don't know yet.

I'd say it's more in line with Guardians with regards to its comedy.
I noticed that Paul Rudd had moments that seemed perfectly written for him. In the credits I noted that he hada writing credit, so I am guessing that he got some input, much like he does in many of his comedies.

Oh and read the BBC's critique of the film. It's actually quite enlightening.

"There’s hardly a trope in it you haven’t seen before, and done with far greater flair."
I am enlightened to the fact that the reviewer clearly didn't pay attention in the film. He doesn't understand the threat posed by the villain, the actual science/powers that Ant-Man has, or the suit design. I'll accept his issues with the dialogue and acting, while I disagree, but when someone complains about something not making sense, despite it having been explicitly explained in the dialogue, I just immediately discredit the rest of the review.

...When I said "quite enlightening", I meant this is how a... how should I put this, a non-geeky, serious-as-heart-attack, sees-cinema-as-art critic views a comic book-based movie.

Except he included more than one points regarding the storyline that are not based in any form of fact. For a serious-as-a-heart-attack critic he is pretty crappy at his job.

I would like to point them out to you and show you how he is wrong, but you haven't seen the film yet and it will spoil some important parts.

...Thanks for the restraint. Hell, the dude's reviewing films for BBC; that says a lot to me at least. :P

As soon as I find "me-time" to see this (no one in my circle of life wants to see this except me :boggled:) we'll finish this convo. 👍

Indeed... feels like he was only paying attention to half the movie. I had to take care of a bawling two year old while watching it, even going outside for several minutes to buy her popcorn, but I caught more of the plot than he did, apparently.

Not that his critique is completely off-base...

Darren Cross truly is an unterrifying super-villain, and what villain sells his greatest weapon to potential enemies when he could simply hire his own army out?

And they could have built the back story of the Wasp a little more... the reasons given for Hope not taking the role of the Ant just aren't convincing...

...and I do have my issues with the tropes... but this is one of the smarter, funner Marvel movies I've seen in a while.

Seems Ant-Man did well, because Ant-Man and the Wasp is coming 2018 now.

Handy it pushes Black Panther closer (though to an unfortunate February date), less good that Captain Marvel gets bumped to 2019.

I'm genuinely curious how Marvel will handle the films that reside between the Infinity Wars entries.

I was watching Civil War at home(again for the 4th time). Watching the airport fight scene. (In thought about when Ant Man slides in Iron Man's suit). The Wasp goes subatomic to disable the missle. That was a similar scene in the Ultimates comic when Cap jumps aboard a missle to disable it.

Seems weird how they wrote it that way for the movie when, they did the same exact thing in the comic.

That's not just Ultimate Cap. Jumping aboard a missile to disable it and falling into the sea and getting frozen in ice is Cap canon from waaaaay back. They simply changed it into a transcontinental bomber in the movie to raise the stakes and give him time for a farewell speech.

Yes, indeed. It's just seeing how The Ultimates are precursor to what we're seeing now. Banner mentioning he broke Harlem. Cap waking up on a hospital stretcher. Jumping out the building(fully clothed in Winter Soldier though). Little things like that.
I should have kept that series. Oh, we'll. Hindsight.

There are always the collections.

I honestly don't have the ability to follow every single comic book I want to follow, nowadays... considering how many there are and how much they cost. I simply pick up random collections that catch my fancy. ;)
