Massive push in SRT4 under acceleration

I just got an SRT-4, fully modded. I took it to High Speed Ring to shake it down, and I have a VERY bad understeer condition.

When I attempt to get back on the gas, the car doesn't want to turn at all. If I can lift off the gas, it will turn almost immediatly, feeling how I want it to. But as soon as I get back onto the throttle, it pushes bad immediatly.

So far, my adjustments have been:

Sodten front springs (from 6.0 to 4.5)
Reduce shock bound on front shocks (from 8 to 5)
Reduce shock bound on rear (from 8 to 7)
Lower front shock rebound (from 8 to 6)
Lower rear shock rebound (from 8 to 7)

OTHER: Changed "auto" gear ratio's from 7 to 17. The gears were WAAAYY too short before. Feels much better in that respect now.

I have also added the spoiler kit, but I'm kinda hesitant to add more front downforce because of the way the car turns when I lift off the throttle. It feels more like a "chassis understeer" than a "downforce understeer".

Can anyone help me get this thing tweaked into proper setup?

You need to adjust your driving style to match the car a bit. This is exactly how FWD cars do not like to be driven.

FWD cars will always understeer on acceleration. While suspension modifications can help that somewhat, the basic physics underlying the whole thing dictate that you only have X amount of traction to split between accelerating and turning. There's no getting around that simple fact, so you need to adjust your driving teechnique to account for it.

FWD cars prefer an early-braking, dogleg line in order to decrease the radius of the acceleration part of the turn as much as possible. So you'll want to brake early, let the AI pass you, and then dive under their line and pass them on exit.

Here are some basic moves you can make to increase the handling of most FWD cars, though:
  • Increase front camber to 3.0

  • Decrease rear camber to zero

  • Increase rear stabilizer setting 1 or 2 clicks

  • Set rear toe out (negative toe) 1 click at a time

Try these steps one at a time until the car handles more to your liking. But in general you're also going to need to adjust yourself to the car.

Also, get rid of all driving aids except possibly one click of TCS. The cornering aids are horrible and they will always second-guess your driving of the car at bad times and screw you up.

400 hp in any FWD car is going to be a handful, particularly if you're trying to late brake. Drive more gently or remove power.

It's good advice. I always set my camber to 3-front and 0-back in front wheel drivers for particularly tight tracks. Didn't realize other people did this, too.

It's true what he says, powerful FF cars really won't turn that well under power, you have to adjust your driving a little more than the car. :D

dude, its an srt-4.....what do you expect

the car does not handl well in real life, and its not gonna handle any better in the game

Actually, it handles okay, for a front-driver. Expect any more, though, and it'll leave you hanging.

Yeah, I'm having a tough time getting used to changing my driving style. I personally love a car with a slight touch of oversteer, and am driven insane by pretty much any understeer at all. Its tough to get used to, especially when I've been running R92CP's, STi Rally cars, etc. for the past couple months. This SRT-4 drives a lot different, and takes a lot of getting used to.

Thanks for the advice though, it helped!

We raced this car in WRS week 5, let me link you to that thread and i will post a few setups as well :). It wasnt a bad car to drive considering it pumped out 515 or so hp through the front wheels. Basically it has to do with TCS and your LSD. Try some of these settings, it should improve it. As well as that also try with out any LSD installed and see if thats better.

7.8 / 4.8
132 / 137
8 / 6
8 / 6
2.1 / 1.1
0 / 0
5 / 4

TCS 1
DF full
LSD 10 / 46 / 15
Brakes 3 / 3

S.rate 7.8/4.8
R.H 132/137
camber 2.1/1.1
rest of suspension stock

down force full
B.B 4/4
LSD 10/46/15

hope that helps. also try LSD 5/60/5

To add onto this request, as I do not want to create another thread, the SRT-4 also has horrible traction wearing the tires out and not going to far the more horsepower you put into it. Anyone know any good settings to cure this and give it more traction during heavy acceleration?

SRT-4 is a Quick car (Sub 7 min at the Ring)

First of you want to Stiffen your front a Bit. Dont drop the front spring rate for FF cars, rais it a bit, but drop the rear, this will help get your butt arround a corner.

The SRT-4 has Alot of Power and you will need to DROP your LSD accell to help with throttle understeer.

Increasing the LSD Accel increases the power making the car go forward (Throttle understeer) Dropping it reduces the power making the car go forward allowing you to throttle through corners.

Here's my set-up for the SRT4:

Dodge SRT4 '03

In the family cup on the first long straight in the N-ring, I easily passed up the Ford GT and probably an SL 55/65 (dunno what it was; I was going too fast :sly: ) if it wasn't for one of my mistakes. :banghead:

Anyway, it has no aids, so if you have a DS2 and are a button masher, I'd add some TCS.
