Once upon a time there was a group of developers who created a really, really good game... so many people liked it that it sold in great numbers far and wide.... but then things went very quiet. Had the developers fallen foul of some wicked witch or eaten poisoned cereal out of the packet?
No one knew... but when the Game 2 arrived the wicked witch theory seemed plausible. For it was very poor indeed. Most people didn't bother to buy it even though they loved the Game 1, because Game 2 was missing features that were sensible. So bad was it that eventually it was given away for free.
Time went by and still nothing decent arrived from these once great developers or maybe that was the answer to the conundrum; they were great, once.
But then they made a couple of really quite good games.... so all was well again and the people rejoiced.. but then they made an indescribable pile of midden, what was it with these developers?
Suddenly from the left of the field a new version of the first good game rode into sight, it looked great for a short while... but then very many people realised that it was only for a short while, as the video sheer in it was so rampant that after only a few minutes they could barely see the screen and were unable to play the good game... it was a strange and fuzzy time in the land of these developers... why did they keep on making such poor games when they could make good ones?
When all hope was gone yet another new game was announced with it seemed much testing and fanfare... so that it was just right and lovely... but not all was as it seemed
We now join a young boy talking to a man watching the procession around the crucible of gaming....
“Have you played this game?” asked the boy
"No but it is great apparently... superb and wonderful, it says so on You Tube …. and that is according to the guys who are paid to like games... so it must be true!!”
The young boy looked somewhat bemused but thought he'd try again
“I've played it and although it looks OK, it is really a pretty poor game” The boy said “It has features missing which make it a real pain and just really boring....”
“Shhhh.. how dare you say that and disagree with the mob!” said the man
“Errr, because it is true... things are quite obviously missing, things one has a right to expect are not there” said the boy and to himself quietly “I'm not one for mobs myself...”
“Look if you keep this up you'll not be allowed to watch the parade or talk to anyone... we must all agree, that's what the law here says... I'll report you to that man over there with the badge... it's that badge which makes him important, you must respect his badge.
“Oh right....not respect him because he has earnt respect, just because he has a badge?” said the boy now totally unconvinced... but he decided to give it just one last try
“Look, what I do not understand is this. This game is sold all over the world but last night I played the game, I did the on-line competition thingy... if this game is so great and wonderful, why are is there only like 400 or 500 people playing it? Like, in the whole world... because when it first came out on consoles there were like 2500... now there is 400 or so only a couple of weeks later.... doesn't that seem strange? If it is so great a game?”
“Oh do be quiet” said the man now well out his depth. He didn't like difficult questions when he hadn't been told the answer to by You Tube or the self important badge man “Look, look!!! Here comes the Emperor holding his copy of the great game in his fine new clothes....
The boy didn't bother looking, he was no fan of rubbish games, fat naked men and mobs who swallow what they are told. So he walked off to see if there was anyone sensible in the kingdom.....but lo, the kingdom was fresh out of free thinkers, they had all been thrown out of the Gau.
Back in his hidden cave, once again the boy knew that just because a few people shout their heads off with little idea why and just because the mob runs after them, not daring to contradict the few unless someone doesn't like them... it really doesn't make them right.
As for self important little men with badges...where is an Isidore when you need one
