Right after launching the RX-7 in America, Mazda would then enter two racing versions in the 1979 Daytona 24-hour race. The cars would qualify 1st and 2nd in the GTU class, 32nd and 34th overall. They would compete against a grid dominated by cars of much higher displacement like the Porsche 935. The grueling 24-hour race started with fears that the compact RX-7s would be overwhelmed by the bigger cars. However, the RX-7s displayed their superior handling through the track’s many tight corners, steadily working their way up through the field. After a impressive performance after 24 hours of racing, Both cars crossed the finish line with a 1-2 in the GTU class, 5th and 6th overall. The car would continue its winning ways for the rest of the season and won the first of seven IMSA GTU championships in a row.

The addition of this car would give a boost to Mazda's line up of races cars and add another winning car alongside the 787B.

I think your power numbers are a bit off. The road car was a 1.1L 12A with 100hp, I would bet the GTU car was quite a bit higher.

It was really difficult to find the specs for this car, either I had a little or no information everywhere I looked. I would appreciate if I had help with finding all that.
