This is the McLaren M9A as used in the 1969 British Formula One Grand Prix by Derek Bell. This is the only McLaren ever fitted with a 4 wheel drive system. McLaren was not the only one experimenting with 4 wheel drive systems in 1969, Matra and Lotus had 4 wheel drive cars. The Cosworth DFV V8 engine was mounted reversed in the chassis and the transmission followed Ferguson lines.
The M9A failed to finish with suspension failure.
Four wheel drive was not a success and it was banned from the 1970 season.
