Mclaren SLS

These pictures prove that early development work is well under way on the 'baby' McLaren, with plans to sell as many as 2000 cars a year to rival the likes of the Ferrari 360 Modena, Lamborghini Gallardo and all-new Audi R8. Although McLaren engineers are remaining tight-lipped about the project, we have learnt that feasibility studies are currently being carried out on the car at one of Mercedes’ secret test-centres in Germany.

McLaren is hoping to use carbonfibre construction for the new car, although there are doubts about the economic viability of using the material for a car with a projected price tag of about 150,000 Euros.

Sources couldn't be budged on whether the new car, thought to be code-named P8, will have a three-seat arrangement similar to that of the F1, but equally our source doggedly refused to confirm the new car as a conventional two-seater. One possibility is that the third seat would be mounted centrally towards the rear, the reverse of the F1's layout. It will be mid-engined though, partly to make it distinct from the front-engined Mercedes SLR McLaren.

And it’s already certain that the car will have to be built by Mercedes, as McLaren's new Woking factory is tied up producing the SLR and doesn't have the spare capacity. It seems that the SLR, the brainchild of Ron Dennis, was originally designed to be the definitive GT car. Ferrari's 550 Maranello was the original target car for the project but it became clear that the SLR would be in a different league when the first projected performance figures were calculated using the higher-than-expected output from the supercharged Mercedes V8. This would in fact leave space for a smaller car, probably called the Mercedes SLS McLaren.

Thats cool they are doing preliminary testing without a body. That may mean that Mercedes is a bit more serious about the car this time around...

I'd say go mid-engine, equip a true manual transmission as an option, use the 6.3L AMG V8, and go with plenty of carbon fiber. That way they may be able to out-run the Italians, and do a better job competing with the R8.

id of thought a new mclaren would have more interest!!

I think alot of people are waiting for something a little more solid.

There has been plenty of news on a baby Mclaren ever since SLR was released, very little of it ever amounting to anything.

Maybe McLaren should just work the hell out of the SLK, it might be a little easier. It worked out well enough with their transformation of the SL, but obviously there was room for improvement.

Meh, I don't know. Until Mercedes or even McLaren packs a manual transmission in with their sports cars, my interest will be very hard to peak.

I'm not sure how accurate that artist's impression is, but it sure looks a lot like a baby ME4-12. It does look pretty cool driving around without any bodywork, but it must be getting a little chilly in Germany. I wouldn't want to be driving a car like that around there now.

Does it sounds like a V8 version of Zonda F?
I will be drooling everywhere if it is true :)

I heard about this at least a year ago, but I wonder if the magazine, which I heard about this is still lying about.

If it "does" look like something like the artist drawing, it shows Daimler is still interested in the ME-412, and using McLaren to go with the project rather than Chrysler would most likely be a wise choice considering out of the 2, it's not obvious who has more experience with these type of vehicles.

Mercedes and McLaren are planning to sell as many as 2000 "SLS" sports cars a year to rival the likes of the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo and the V10 version of Audi's R8, according to the insiders at Brenda Priddy & Company. Although McLaren engineers are remaining tight-lipped about the project, sources say feasibility studies are currently being carried out on the car at one of Mercedes’ secret test centers in Germany.

It's market segment is already starting to get fairly complicated and overpopulated,
the only way I think this thing is going to work is if they build it like it should be,
and match those looks with serious performance with little to no comprimises.

Place it around 150k+ and they might have themselves a genuine winner, and a
new vehicle that ties with the original Mercedes-Benz formula.

Hmmm I don't know. It looks fine, but it's not jumping out at me.

Personally, I think it would look much better with a set of normal tail pipes, those things just make it look like a cheap Pagani rip-off, and spoils the back of the car.

EDIT: Hold on, I just noticed those heart shaped head-lights. I don't know if I like them or not! What an odd, odd, car...

I don't get how this can happen. Word on the street is that Mercedes is pissed at McLaren, for forcing them to honor the 3500 production number on the SLR despite the fact that it's not selling. I'm surprised Mercedes hasn't put McLaren on the auction block yet, let alone collaborate on another road car.

As for the tail-pipes, I really think they should consider sticking them down-bottom and placing them like the Toyota LF-A concept.

As for the Mercedes-McLaren dispute, I never knew anything about that?

I've merged GT Pro's new thread with this exisiting one.

Nonetheless, it is real. I actually don´t think this project will get real, ever.

Merc wanted to buy a major share of McLaren, but just the other day, it was announced that McLaren had opted to sell a major piece to a Bahrain based company. [speculation] I´m pretty sure Merc are not very pleased with that move.[/speculation]

But how many SLR's did they sold now?

That is a really cool looking car. I'll have to agreee on the exhaust, however. A roadster would be pretty cool.

The 1000th Mclaren was built a year ago, so I'd suspect around 1500 have been built. The Brabus version of the SLR looks really cool. Can't wait for a Brabus SLS. That would be one fast car.

mercedes dont need mclaren to help make this car. I want to know how exactly mclaren contributed to the SLR cause I dont see it. They should just buy brabus or get AMG to do the work. The clk-dtm sure turned out well.

But then it's just another fat overpowered AMG Mercedes.

The Mclaren name itself is a huge selling point.

IIRC the SLR did not turn out how McLaren wanted it. Mercedes wanted loads of luxury, which McLaren, and Gordon Murray in particular, did not want. Luxury adds weight, and weight is the enemy of the sportscar.

Using AMG would have been a better option for the SLR. McLaren's work was undone by the extra weight.

EDIT:

Which is what the SLR is.

Well, if you would check the actual website, it seems it is more MERCEDES that has zilch to do with it.

McLaren is the primary builder of this car. Without McLaren, it would M-B would be forced to start another line to other AMGs.

Check the facts, dude.

Why would they be on the auction block? Mercedes doesn't own McLaren. Hell, McLaren is it's own group.
