It wasn't sold in the states, but it existed.

Less than 100 rumored to have been made. 525 horsepower 7.3-liter V-12; 0-60 in the low to mid 4 second range. And yes, it's the same engine fron the Pagani Zonda. Interestingly it's also the only AMG V12 ever, aside from the 6-liter biturbo in the present '65' models.

lol Ive seen one of these on the road too! (a hardtop AMG not this soft top, does that still count?)

I remember the wheels being pretty big and quite wide, I was behind it and I got a good listen to it take off, It had a deep wheezing kind of sound from the exhaust. When I saw it, it looked like it could have done with a small rear spoiler but It does look better without thinking about it now...

'95 amg sl73

top speed 250 kph

Whoa that car is great i didn't realise how good it really was!!

I think it is stupid that they put a 7.3ltr engine in and it was that slow, you'd think they would make it lightening fast no wonder it was so rare...cos it was rubbish!

4.2 seconds 0-60 is slow? What the **** do you drive, a rocket ship?

Sorry Tommi but 4.2 is still lightning by even todays standards, much more so 10 years ago. slotted above the also rare also not sold here and not quite as fast sl60 which is even more rare than the 7.3 IIRC

You do realize the first Zondas weren't much faster, right? Only about .5 seconds faster with the '99 C12-S.

Certainly, +1 right there...

...Heck, 4.2 0-60 still outruns the majority of the AMG 63-series models from Mercedes, and there have been many tests in which the Lamborghini Gallardo hasn't been able to beat that.

I'd call that most impressive, especially for ten years ago...

It might be faster than a late ZR-1 in the straights but too heavy to keep up in the corners... Think of it as the ultimate GT at the time similar to how the SL-65 is among the best there is today.
EDIT: treed by skip

Are you insane?! Considering the SL73 weights in at a very hefty 4500lbs--the 0-60 in 4.2~4.4 seconds it produces is extremely fast. The only thing the regular Zonda had over it was it was much lighter. Drop that 7.3L in a lighter weight car and it would easily outrun most things on the road.

And it probably went like a rocket ship from 40-70.

I could only DREAM of what that thing would feel like. All that heavy Merc mass traveling so quickly--I would probably sport wood.

Seriously, and that was only because it weighed less. What an awsome engine that thing is. The noise alone is worth the price of admission.

Now they are. Still using a 7.3, but with forced induction if I am not mistaken...

Nah, the 7.3L never saw forced induction from AMG for the SL or Zonda.

Certainly, +1 right there...

Considering 10 years ago there were still only a few cars breaking the 4.0 second 0-60mph barrier.

Do you by any chance know what it did in the 1/4?

I'm curious how it stacks up against a ZR-1.

That I'm affraid might be impossible to find. Google isn't helping--and no one will EVER run a ring time in it either. I'd consider the SL73 AMG one of the most rarest modern cars. I doubt anyone here will ever truely see one in person.

The early Zondas made slightly more power with the same engine as the SL mostly because of exhaust and intake plumbing, I don't know much about Pagani but I'll bet 2 E dollars if later versions made more power it's because of lighter internals and revised engine mapping.

I don't have the quarter time, but I'm not sure it matters much since the vehicles were never sold in the same country.

They are totally different types of cars too, but it is interesting because they were made at almost exactly the same time.

I was on about top speed!!!!!:(
And damn that is fast when you think about it!
Its hard to understand what i meant aswell.

I've read that the old, 400 BHP SL600 could pull 180 in its sleep. That was with 150 less BHP than the SL73. With that extra BHP? I'd presume it would be near the 3rd speed limiter on the Mercedes SL55 AMG.

I think there was a Brabus E-Class W210 (the first one with the 4 headlaps) with this engine, or I am mistaking.... Its aerodinamics are a bit better than the R129 SL and it reached 330kmh (I think about 206 mph?) ....so the SL73 should theoretically do over 315-320 kmh (I'd say....)

EDIT: The Brabus E V12 had the same engine but with 580 HP.....so the top speed on the SL73 would be a bit lower

Takes a big man to admit a mistake. Cool beans, Tommi, good on you.

You fool. :D

I might even +rep you just for taking the flak. ;)
