The Mercedes-AMG GT S will be the new safety vehicle for the DTM racing series.
The car will make its first appearance during the second DTM race for the season at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, set to take place from 29 to 31 May. The German manufacturer says the sports car will help “to ensure maximum safety on the race track in the world's most popular touring car series.”
In technical terms, the 4.0-liter 8-cylinder 510 PS (375 kW) engine of the vehicle has been left virtually unchanged compared to the production car, as well as most of the other parts of the machine. The AMG-GT S Safety Car will be driven by racing driver Jürgen Kastenholz, who will take to the track “when dangerous situations, such as an accident, extreme weather conditions or other incidents make it necessary for the vehicle to be deployed.”
