History:This Mercedes 300 SLR dominated the sports car world in 1955. The car finished 1st and 2nd at the 1955 Mille Miglia. This 1st place car was driven by Sterling Moss averaging 157.65 km/h (97.96 mph) over 1,600 km (990 mi). The 2nd place car was piloted by another racing great, Juan Manuel Fangio. The car later placed another 1st and 2nd place win at Targa Florio of the same year. This caused Mercedes to win the 1955 World Sportscar Championship. However the car was involved in the deadliest racing crash in history when it slammed into another car. The Mercedes' engine was dislodged from the car and killed 82 spectators. The cars crash overshadowed its outstanding racing history making this historic sportscar forgotten.
