The only way could even be connected is if the designer of one, quit that company and moved to the other.

Maserati is part of Fiat. Mercedes is not. They share nothing as far as I know.

It makes me laugh at how my country's car companies always try to copy the European cars, that ford looks like a striped down flattened BMW or Mercedes.

It's not a rip off because the car was in development before the Mercedes VGT was ever unveiled. The Maserati is an actual car that's going into production. It will be in dealers next year and will be in the 911 range. Any similarities are coincidental much like the vague styling similarities on the SRT Viper and C7 Corvette. You can actually see the influence in styling that recent Maserati models have had on the Alfieri. In fact, for that reason I would say that if anything the Mercedes VGT copied Maserati more that anything.

On a separate note, how great is it to see Maserati getting an actual sports car again? This once great sports car maker has lived essentially as Ferrari's luxury branch for a while now, glad to see them getting the okay to be back in the game and it's a perfect range to put the car. I'd have that in red over a 911 any day!
