MG vs. BMW

how can they compare a 1.8l 4-banger with a 2.5l V6 ??? I say take the 325i atleast and that MG will be blown away. Anyhow seems like a pretty dumb comparison, and as soon as I saw the two cars, I thought they were both BMW. Then I looked again and I noticed the one on the right was an MG, and much uglier.

yeah... not the most intelligent challenge or whatever... to me it has the "slopiness" of a new jag with a bimmer front end... and pipes...

US people aren't yet acclimated to the brilliant MG line - perhaps if they were stuck with boring, outclassed Rovers for years they'd be more appreciative.

Good point except the ZT160 2.5 V6 sells for 18,970 GBP; the 318i sells for 21,155 GBP. That's a difference of $2200 in the MG's favour. Meanwhile, the 325i costs 26,590 GBP - that difference of $7700 would take the two vehicles out of the same class.

Yea thats true. But they would be better off comparing it with something that costs similar to it and that has a 6 cylinder. Something like an Accord V6. Both are very similar in price (Accord should be abit cheaper with correct exchange rate), but the Accord has 240 bhp and a 6 speed manual. 0-62 is nearly the same as well. This would be a more appropriate match up.. but I guess BMW is always the standard for which other manufacturers always seem to have to compare with.. so they chose the BMW which is in the same price range... hence the 318

Edit: Bravo MG, you sure showed us all!

Could have sworn the BMW they picked was a 2.0 i4...

It's a no-brainer for Company Car fleet managers - they pick the cheapest car that serves the function well. Hence all those Mondeos (which are good) and Vectras (which are not). Stick an MG ZT up against a V6 Mondeo or Vectra and it'd be sent packing with it's tailpipe up it's thinly-veiled Rover facade...

Not always. A base model BMW has next to nothing apart from the essentials (Power steering, central locking, power front windows), while a even a base model MG ZT has all that + power rear windows, Air con, Cd player and ABS

But what do Company Car fleet managers care about that?

Bear in mind that a brand new Ford Fiesta can have all the extras TVRKing mentioned for HALF the price of that BMW...

Most Mondeo models beat the living crap out of similar priced BMW 3-series models for speed, comfort, extras - in fact the only 3-series capable of out-performing the Mondeo ST220 is the M3. And that's twice the price. The only place BMWs traditionally win is build-quality and reliability. But guess what? Not any more - and the Mondeo costs less to fix if bits DO go wrong...

Well let's see.

Claim 1: BMW has more history.
BMW founded 1911. Ford founded 1903.

Claim 2: BMW has more credibility.
Not really totally sure what this means. However, the current generation Mondeo was last year's Top Gear Car Of The Year and the best BMW can do is a win in this year's Executive Car class. In JD Power surveys, no BMW makes it into the top 10 - whereas the Focus does.

Claim 3: BMW has more reliability.
Absolute tripe. The current "most reliable car" is... the Ford Focus. The current Mondeo is not yet old enough to have it's MoT, but it's expected to eclipse even that.

BMW in general are held to be reliable, however when parts DO go wrong they cost the earth to fix. This is an important consideration for Company Car fleet managers - overall the running costs for a same-spec BMW 3-series to a Mondeo are in the order of double...

Tripe!!

If VenomFX220 is from the US, and I suspect he is, then he's right about BMWs being more reliable (though the discussion is about the UK market, but most Americans don't understand how well Ford produces cars over there).

My dog liked tripe...

I agree (again... spooky). European Fords are now close to the most reliable cars made. Subaru tends to top the JD Powers, but the build quality and reliability of the Scooby is laughable. The others are Lexus (!), Toyota (!!), BMW, Mercedes (the only car company named after a girl), VW & Audi. Ford is now right in that bunch...

What! As the proud owner of a new Subaru Outback sedan I take offence - they're built extremely well and they're super-reliable. You're mad - ask vat_man.

Our most reliable cars are consistently Infiniti products (Nissan's North American luxury division) although at its release the Q45 was the most technologically advanced car to date. I've noticed that the more technologically advanced cars are, the less reliable they tend to be (as a general group - in the past one could look at a Camry and say 'reliable' whereas god only knows what problems might befall the new E-class or Phaeton).

That's a Legacy though... Over here Scooby = Impreza.

My brother has a 1999 Impreza RB5 with a nadgers' under 30000mi on it. It's rated as the best Impreza ever made - including 22B - up until the MY03. I've not actually seen any reports pitting it against the MY03 - but she's a different beast altogether.

The paint is so thin you could fart it off the panels. The panels themselves are so thin you can poke your finger through them. He daren't close the boot using the spoiler. Neither front windows fit when closed - and an attempt to repair them by the Subaru garage (who are legendary for panicking when they get an Impreza) left them still not fitting, but nicely scratched to buggery.

Then it developed a tickover scuttle-shake. After 4 visits, this turned out to be a Superchips mod chip which the garage who sold it him knew nothing about. This of course invalidated the warranty (£600) entirely. He had to drive to them (200 miles) for them to fix it, leaving him with a slower car than he's used to. And then he spent £700 on a brake kit because the Scooby stoppers are CRAP (and again, legendarily so).

He's had more trouble with that than I've had with my 1993 Fiesta...! And I'm getting rid of it because it's unreliable :D

Pah! All Subarus are built to last.

So he got a bad break - they're not all so bad!!

Pity - it's the car he's been after for some time now - only 442 ever built too.

The Impreza isn't even close to it's reputation for reliability. It's a pity - the Legacy and Forrester are literally bulletproof. I guess it's what you get with such a "hooligan" car - they get driven hard (because everyone tries to challenge them), and they break. A kid in a modded Corsa tried it on with my brother - Christ knows why...

The only car so far that's slapped his ass from here to Tuesday was an Exige. That was what prompted him to get the brakes - he entered a roundabout sideways, trying not to hit this tiny little rocket that just stopped from 130mph...
