Farewell Michael... :indiff:

Not yet gone, but will surely be missed when he leaves... he was one of my favourite players from the 2nd best team ever created, the Early '00 Galácticos...

(The best team, obviously, IS 1996-1997 Toros Neza's squad, but that's another story :sly:)

Any thoughts???

A great player but injury has always hampered him. Going to Spain was one of the worst things that he could have done as well. I expect he will go into the football media like Gary Neville has done.

No, he was successful in Spain. United was the worst move; he was nowhere near good enough for the team and he could have had another 2-3 years of goalscoring form at a lesser club, much like the Newcastle team he left. But Fergie was always a big fan of Owen, and he has at least got a Premiership medal out of it...

He was never the same player after his major hamstring injury in ~2000-2001, but did well enough despite it.

He lost a lot of fitness in Spain though. Even though he got 15 goals in 40 appearances in 1 season the pace of football in Spain is a lot lower than the EPL and when you factor in his recurring injury, when he came back to England, his fitness was a lot lower than when he left Liverpool. Just think what would happen to Giggs' fitness if he went to Spain.

The '98 to '02 era was his purple patch, after that it started going downhill. His career as a top class player started it's downward path when the hamstrings started to go, culminating with his cruciate problem in the 2006 World Cup. He was then more interested in horse racing, and lately Twitter than playing football.

I agree. He shouldn't have gone to United. Didn't do much to help the team as he was behind Rooney, Chicharito & Bervatov... which were clearly better than him... If he had moved to another team, he might have had a better goal production, since he still was a decent starter 2 years ago...

I think he was very very good for a short period of time, but then... injuries came... :indiff: I think he could have been the British Ronaldo, but he had even worse injury problems than Il Fenómeno, who despite blowing up both of his knees, became the world's most powerful No. 9 ever...

His pace was gone by the time Liverpool sold him; a lot of Liverpool fans I know say they were surprised Madrid even bought him.

But still, during his aforementioned purple match 1998-2002, he was one of the finest strikers in the country. He had a huge impact on the game.

And, he's as English as David Lloyd George; that is, born in England but brought up in Wales. Specifically, Ewloe in Deeside where I'm from. He still holds the schools goalscoring record for this area. If only he played for Wales. Heh, but that's a massive 'if only' on my part...

Great player, and I will always remember the 4-3 goal against City. :P

I wish Owen good luck, and he surely will be missed in the Premier League.

Yeah he'll be well remembered for that. People say his move to United was a bad one but he won is only PL medal here and he score 18 goals in 19 starts for us. Not exactly a bad return if you ask me.
