RAMORE, ONT.—Millions of dollars in coins and a shipment of candy have been scattered across an Ontario highway following the crash of Brink’s tractor-trailer that seriously injured two people.

Police say both of the men who were in the Brink’s truck are in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. this morning on Highway 11, north of Kirkland Lake in northeastern Ontario, when the truck collided with a rock face.

Ontario Provincial Police say the crash also caused a number of chain-reaction crashes, but the injuries were minor.

One of the trucks involved in the resulting crashes was carrying candy, police say.

That candy along with $3 to $5 million worth of loonies and toonies are on the road and in the surrounding bush.

The highway has been closed by police, who are essentially standing guard.

Well, first and foremost I hope the truck drivers recover from their injuries, but $5 million in loonies and toonies must be a 🤬 of a sight! What do you guys think? I personally have issues trying to comprehend all of that money, just lying across the road haphazardly. I pity the police assigned to stand guard, though.

If any GTP'ers live up there now's your chance to make a quick buck! :sly:

How horrible. :guilty:

For God's sake, it's federal currency and you people talk about it like it's a Hanna Barbera character!

I don't understand your objection. I've spent a lot of time in Canada and everyone refers to one and two dollar coins as "loonies and toonies".

As a matter of fact, a fast food restaurant (think it was taco bell) had an offer on called "toonie tuesday's". They missed the point a little though. It actually cost $2.50. Add on tax and it was nearer to $3. I said they should have called it "loonie toonie Tuesday".

You realize that is what they call it there, right? Like, everyone there calls them that?

Good lord, deflate that serious stick. The Brit's call Pound Sterlings "quid" which just makes me think of a sea animal.

Here in Ireland we also refer to Euros as "quid", but it was carried on from the fact that we referred to our old Punts/Pounds as "quid" too.

It would be weird to not have the Toonie or Loonie.
It feels good when the money has weight and is a physical thing. Really useful for lunchs too.

No, no, no! You've got it all wrong! Loonies are how we refer to single Canadians, and Toonies are what we call crazy couples. :P

, it's true :P

What!?!?!?!?!?

I hope they replace loonies and toonies - not because loonies and toonies are bad - but because I can't hold change in my wallet!!! :)

It was KFC, and yeah, there's literally nobody in Canada who calls them 1 and 2 dollar coins. They replaced the 1 dollar bill with the coin, which has a loon on one side (Queen on the other) hence the name loonie. The toonie came after and was just a name that stuck.

One of Canada's iconic birds is a Loon. It's featured on the front of the "Loonie" hence the name. Toonies were developed years later and I guess the geniuses in government thought it was cleaver to just change the L to a T and now you have the sound of 2 at the front! They must have been proud of themselves

Is there pictures anywhere of this yet? I'd love to see more than 2 million coins spread across a road... 2 million coins! I have a rather large magnet at home... Now as for the police and 24 hour drive to get there

When I buy a muffin, I don't want to get 3-4 dollars in change. :ouch:

Yes it sucks... Then again up here debit cards are used infinitely more than in the states. We don't use cash as much as Americans, or credit cards. Even your "debit cards" are visa debit, up here you get a debit card directly from your bank and it comes directly from your chequing or savings, visa credit cards are a separate thing altogether. We use debit all the time and I rarely if ever carry cash.

Edit: sorry noob I see you already described the names but I replied when I was on the first page.

It's a line from "How I Met Your Mother".

I would have thought someone would have picked up on that by now.
