Minimum internet speed?

I am from Nepal and we don't have fast internet connection. I've a 256 kbps broadband connection. It took me almost 2 hours to download the latest patch (150 MB). Is it enough to play online? I tried once last night. It looked ok to me. Most lounge had only one signal strength.
I've tried COD MW2 and Uncharted 2, it doesn't work. FIFA 10 was playable but lagged a lot at times.

Online play is more dependant on latency ("ping") than connection speed.

If your "ping" is below 100ms, you're good for online play. Below 50ms and you're doing well. Below 20ms and you won't notice any difference compared to offline play.

The further away you try to connect, the larger the latency becomes - so you might have an acceptable latency to, say, Bhutan but a terrible one to New Zealand.

Hi, i have a ping of 21 ms more or less, and still i have problems with the lag... people always tell me my lag is huge..! What could it be..? I have a 3MB connection. .!

That's only your local ping. If you try to play with people outside your locale it may increase significantly.

I'm not familiar with the internet infrastructure of Central America, but it looks like you're routed through Panama to the South and then up through the isthmus (Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize) to the North - any traffic you send or receive with PS3s in other nations is dependent on the networks in other Central American countries. If they suck, even slightly, you're going to have a really bad time playing with guys in the USA.

Try going onto Speedtest.net and measuring your ping to servers in the USA - you'll probably find it's running at well over 100ms. I just ran a Speedtest.net test for me:

Manchester (UK) - 51ms
New York, NY (USA) - 128ms
San Jose (Costa Rica) - 282ms

You can see I'd play well with others in my own country and even 3,000 miles of undersea cable can't stop me from at least giving it a go with East Coast USA - but if I were to play with you we'll not have fun.

How do you connect PS3 to the internet, through Wi-Fi or use ethernet cable? If through Wi-Fi, you might experience an improvement if you connect directly to router. Also upload speed is important along with ping, and doing what Famine said about testing speed in different countries through Speedtest.net should be helpful to find out why others might see you lag. Also going on Pingtest.net should be helpful to see quality of your line. You need to have Java installed to check for packet loss.

yes, i use the Wi-fi connection, i tried that page and gave me a ping of 70ms..... i thinks its better to find some local players or get a better connection..!

It seems you have decent ping times, did you find out about your upload speed and line quality? If it is possible try and use wired connection.
