Welcome to Minicooper's "short report!"
Every once in a while I will do a short report on a race I did in Gran Turismo 4. It will not always be in GT mode either, sometimes it will be in Arcade Mode too.
Today, I raced a fabulously fun and exciting race in the Special Conditions hall, with an underpowered yet lighter Alfa. 👍
I hope you enjoy it!
The Lineup:
1: Renault 5 Turbo '80: 159HP, 970kg, MR
2: (me)Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale '63: 125 HP, 894KG, FR
THE RACE:
Well, this is my first report in the section. Let's kick it off with one of my favorite cars, against another of my favorite cars, on one of my favorite tracks, in manual, with no driving aids, and few modifications, for exactly 114 A-spec points.
From the beginning I could tell we both had closely matched cars, neither pulled away from the other. As we raced down the city roads, the more powerful Renault failed to get any farther ahead. A semi-tight right hander requires the Renault to brake, but I just fling through it full throttle. However, this flung me so far to the left, that in order to take the next chicane, I needed to fling the car all the way to the right. Man, if there was ever a time when this car showed signs of body roll, it's right here!
My foe takes it slow, missing the apexes, but I have to keep my speed up. I floor the gas coming out of the left hander and clip the apex through the right. By now it's obvious that I'm not going to fall behind.
A car's length apart, I throw the car through the sweeper, and trade paint with the blue box as I begin to accelerate.
Now, as far to the left as possible, I flick the wheel to the right and late apex the turn.(If you are infamiliar with the term "late apex," it basically means that I waited to turn until the last second, giving me a faster exit) As I pull away I can see a blue blob growing in my mirror. I may have the advantage in the turns, but if I'm going to win this, I need to keep him from passing on the straits.
The brakes burn as the Alfa goes through into the twisty section. Shifting into third, I hit the gas again to keep my speed up, and then slow down to second to take the left, and then the right.
Now comes a tricky part I could never seem to master - a tight downhill chicane looks wider than it is. I slow down cautiously here, but that French car doesn't seem to want to give up. He takes advantage in between all the corners and comes to within a a yard or two of my rear end. Luckily I power my way ahead and keep my lead on the strait. I notice the car behind me is 1.371 seconds behind.
"A good lead" I say to myself, "but this next turn could ruin it for me."
As I slow down the enemy is playing mind games. It seems that he is trying to ram me, after all he probably has better brakes anyway, but I quickly turn right to avoid him. Unfortunately, this defensive move put me in a bad position for the next left, as I get understeer on the left side of the road, and have to move to the left before I can take the turn. I slow down a bit and throw the Alfa across the road, until I can "swing" it left and accelerate.
Taking the next hairpin in first, I get wheelspin on the exit. It seemed strange to get wheelspin in this car, but I got it, and it had caused a tiny problem. I needed to either shift to stop the wheelspin, or let off the gas, neither of which are good choices. If I shifn now, I will be going very slow in second gear. If I let off the gas, it will just slow me down. It would be as if I was being chased by a lion, and then slowing down to let it catch up - It wasn't going to happen.
My final decision was to let the wheels continue spinning, and wait before I shifted. "I just hope this doesn't ruin my chances later on..."
This was the easiest part. I reached the final stretch for this lap, but I was well aware of one final chicane before I was home free. This corner had destroyed my possibilities time and time again. It was NOT going to happen this time. I pressed the brakes. Hard. I wasn't about to come to a grinding stop with my fenders torn off on the side of the road, in a classic Alfa Romeo! Especially not with a French car chasing me! My only, and I mean only, option was to brake much harder than I needed too, just to be absolutely safe here.
Then I floored it.
I just put the pedal to the metal and watched the Renault get uneasy watching, and knowing, that if he couldn't keep up on that lap then there was no way he could beat me on the next...
Unless I crashed. Although he had lost 99% of his hope, the 1% he had left was dangerous. I took the first section the same way I did on the first lap, trying to keep my speed up without hitting anything. But I could see in my mirror, he was so desperate, he hit several walls just hoping he would be able to go faster. I almost felt sorry for him, after all he had a nice Renault and was ruining it just to...
beat me.
I realized the key word was almost. He is crashing and smashing to try and get ahead. Well, I'm not about to let him catch up now, this is racing.
By the time I reached the next sector, he was around 2.2 seconds behind, and nothing could stop me. I pounded the apex of every corner up to the next strait. Pounded. I was peeling the protective red and white paint of of all the rumble strips. I was blowing the bricks out of the walls. I was on a roll.
And that roll continued through the next chicane and hairpin. "Brakes - turn in - throttle" was my motto through there. Once again I had spin through the right hander, but shifting late kept it under control.
I loved it. Winding through the city streets, crowds of people cheering me on...
Wait, they're not looking at me. They're looking at something behind me, something I couldn't see, some kind of object they were rooting for. I guess I was so focused I couldn't figure it out, but they were rooting for the Renault.
Why? I was winning after all. I... I can't remember, were they rooting for him at the beginning too? I... think they were... No, maybe they weren't. A quick look in my mirror and I see a blue spec. This is not right, why would they be rooting for him, is it out of pity? After all he did wreck his car just to "try" to catch up. Yeah, let's go with that. They pity him.
All of the sudden I see red and white arrows. This was it. this was the turn. I hadn't prepared for it at all. It was here, and I wasn't ready. All I could do was hit the brakes...Everything went black
"What the... I'm...I'm... still on the track?!" The speedometer reads 55mph, and I see a blue dot in my mirror. I can't move my foot off the accelerator pedal. It's stuck there, and my hands are stuck to the steering wheel. I'm stuck. Just stuck. Stuck in the best position I could ever want.

"Well, that was fun."
"Yep. I'm suprized you won, in that Alfa, I always thought they were slow."
"Yeah well, I must say, I was suprized myself. Anyway, good race! I enjoyed it a lot, and hope we'll meet again."
"Me too, maybe I'll buy an Alfa Romeo someday, maybe not as old, but maybe an inexpensive used one."
And that driver of the Renault turned out to be M5Power, and I convinced him to buy an Alfa.
I hope you enjoyed this "Short Report" so please comment on it.
(Now that I look at it, it's not as short as I thought.)
