Mission 12 - Still Going! (Now Victorious)

I have been battling this mission since Saturday, and it is beginning to drive me crazy. It has been a blast learning Laguna Seca but the AI cars are killing me.

This morning I get up early to go for a bike ride but find a cold rain to greet me at the from door, so I say well I guess I have an hour to play GT4. Turn on the PS2 and turn the volume down a touch so the wife and son don't wake up and select my favorite mission this week #12.

My first few attempts were quite humbling to say the least, brain and fingers are not yet coordinated at this hour. On my 5th try I end up with a not so bad finish of 3.5 seconds behind the Oreca, no worries I am still warming up.

The next couple attempts I am not where I want to be after the first lap (not ahead of the Saleen before the hairpin at the beginning of lap 2). Finally I get a great start, fastest ever and what do I do - I rear end the viper on the corner before the corkscrew - the split was something like 16.2 seconds. I decide to ease up a bit for the next attempt and target hitting that turn at a high 16 seconds so I can pass the viper on the right hand side so I can break in time for the hairpin.

After another fifteen minutes of trying I pull of my best 1st lap where I pass both the viper and the saleen before lap 2 begins. I am getting mentally pumped because I know this is where I want to be after lap 1.

I hit the hairpin and am on the tail of 3rd place and I am able to overtake him before the 2nd turn before the corkscrew (man I am doing great...) So I keep pressing but I am a little to excited and I grab a little dirt on the next turn, no biggy but a loss of a half a second or so.

After flying through the corkscrew I am able to see #2 spray some dirt on the bend before the final hairpin. Focused I smell the kill and keep pressing on. I round the hairpin with ease and pass the camaro (whoever #2 is) before the end of lap 2 and the Oreca is in my sights!

Now it is time for for some serious racing. I round the first hairpin with perfection and fly into the first right a little too excited and I grab some dirt, no worries I am on his tail. The next right is done okay but could be better and I am catching up. The 2nd turn before the corkscrew I brake too early and am off my line! Okay I still have a chance!!

I fly through the next corner and am right behind as we enter the corkscrew. I have to slow a little so I dont hit him. The next left is done with ease and I am on his tail! Oh no! I went to hot into the soft right and caught a little dirt. Oreca is still within reach... The final hairpin I try to cut inside without the penalty and make it, but I lost too much speed! (Dam 5 second penalty fear!) I am a 1/4 car lenght behind coming out but he is a gear ahead at first.

I'm gaining ... come on you Ford!

Finish: 0'00.0152 2nd place!!!!

That bastard is mine after work tonight!

You almost have it! Just make sure you take that last sharp turn with a GOOD apex and try not to hit any cars...
Just keep trying, that Mazda 787B will hold...

Good Luck!!

Good luck, I agree this one takes flawless 3 laps. ...but you'll make it! :)

What I once did in one Mission (can't recall which one), I had a 5 sec. handicap, cause I hit the wall, usually it's time for the "Start" Button and "Exit"then, but I still took my chances and didn't give up, I ran into the same situation as you and was behind the leader in the last corner. I knew I won't make it anyway, I mean I was already punished 5 secs for hitting the walls, so I didn't slow down for the last corner, I just drove right into his side and smashed him into the grass and wall.
Of course I got another 5 secs for that, but till he was out the grass, I crossed the finish line and made it!
Sometimes it's good to be mean!

OUCH! I hate being beaten by such a little margin, especially when they have such a big lead at the start line. I agree with dogdaysunrise - sometimes you just have to play dirty.

Went home at lunch to give it another go...

Took me 3 tries to get my timing on cue. Then I had fantastic first lap and an ok second lap, on the final lap I passed the Oreca Viper just before the final hairpin. :)

But got so excited that I missed my braking point! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Hit the dirt, spun, very angry, went back to work... tonight after a beer the Oreca is mine!

I bet all you are thinking is this mission while you are at work. :) . It happened to me when I was attempting misson 34. I can't think nothing else but that mission.

Shooooot. I do that kind of stuff all the time. You just need to suck more often, then these little disappointments won't be so hard on your nerves (:

Don't feel so bad i once lost this one by 0.0024....don't be swapin paint at the finish.

Now its on to the Opera track....i really hate that track coz i suck at it.

I'm on 11 and can't even get within 5 seconds of first place. Bah. I don't even plan to finish the game - why even mess with these stupid things?

For you who has problems beating those missions, there are videos posted up in the GT4 message board. I believe it's under Mission Hall is ****. I think they have video posted up for most of the missions. Just go and take a look, it should be helpful.

Well I finally did it... twice actually! The first time I was behind the oreca going into the final hairpin so I decided to vent a little frustration on him.... WHAM! Sent him flying into next week somewhere. We both spun into the dirt however my 5 sec penalty was not as bad as his trip to Abu Dhabi. Somehow he comes out right on my tail and I win by 0.5 seconds. But I had a guilty conscience... :guilty:

So I went to bed fealing a little out of sorts about the 250 aspec points I just took from the mission. I get up in the morning and give it another try. After a few bad first laps I manage to pull off a good couple in row and start lap 3 about 6.3 seconds behind. The viper was in my sights after I passed 2nd place on the first hairpin. I have a couple bad turns in a row so I'm not gaining too much but I come up to the corkscrew and he is right there! I fly through the soft left hander and burn through the right and fly past him. Zooming through the final hairpin I look in the rearview mirror and wave good-bye to mission 12 - clear and legit with a time of 4:09.248.

Now my plane leaves for Paris I beleive and I'll be driving a slightly less powerful car for mission 13. :)

...unfortunately, I wasn't quite as lucky with #34 last night.....

Hehe, this one somehow requires a bit of practicing, you can not fully rely on your lucks :dopey:
