I think the Mission Challenges are great.... but am having real trouble with the rally sections. It took me forever to get bronze on level 5.... and you only had to get from 8th to 5th..... and I managed by about ⅓ car length - eventually.
Now on level 6 and have to get to 3rd from 8th..... in 2 laps. It'll take months at the rate I'm "learning"!!

Anyone have any car ideas, set-ups or other tips that might give me an advantage??

Yeah. Maybe months. I just got gold one one of them, two events left to gold, nighttime Colorado and the six lap race at Brazil where the R8 crushes your Mazda. They are not easy except for the aliens and super experienced.

As for tips, the rally stuff is very easy to over drive. Keeping tight to the line and being smooth are super critical. I always use the Audi Quattro, I believe it’s the most powerful B spec. Traction control is completely off for me as that felt better and a pretty heavy negative brake bias -3 or -4. Make sure to watch the demo video, the other cars will behave the same way every time so you’ll learn the passing points you need to medal.

Thanks both, that's really helpful advice. Had forgotten about the Audi Quattro.... been using the WRX and the RCZ. I might even try the Lancia Delta (sure I've seen it), that used to work well in Colin McRae's rally game!

Cheers.

Can you add power and reduce weight?

The Delta isn't a Group B car in the game, you can't use it.

Should be able to as it's a garage car.... I don't think it does that BOP thing for the race, I'll check. Don't want to add any power.... got plenty of that - it's a control issue (me!!)

You're right about the Delta, I'll try the Audi.

Use brake indicator. Normally, in regular races, brake indicator appears before the actual time you need to brake. However, in rally mode, you can use it directly. Before any corner, when the brake indicator appears start braking and start to turn before the corner. While turning do not apply full throttle, just do it slowly. You will manage it easily ;)

I find the difficulty fo the challenges varies quite a lot, there are plenty I have got gold on my first try and others will take a lot of attempts. To be honest, I didn't find the rally challenges any more of less difficult than others ingeneral, a similar mix of easy and hard. Like others have said, you have to slow down earlier. I tend to avoid big drifts though and try to keep the car as straight as I can, maybe kicking the back out only a little bit when it's needed and then as soon as you seen the corner exit you can accelerate hard out of it.

Try using your Engine Brake mor than the Full on Pedal brake. you will have more control over the car.
Also, as a beginner, keep the TCS on 1, there is no benefit in turning it off and losing grip everytime you go full throttle out of corners.

My last Mission Challenge to gold is the Stage 4 Challenge 6 Colorado Night race in the Toyota. I have tried this one sooo many times and I’m always following the leader into the last corner at the end.

I've recently tried on-throttle braking, pretty helps for front engine cars to cut down on swaying from side to side. I've been trying to score for several rally challenges but still slowly climbing the timesheets.

I watched the example video for that challenge and there’s a lot of off throttle turning, or coasting, and then full throttle. Stabs at the throttle in fact. I tried to match the style and while a little sloppy I was faster. Almost won. Almost. One win and then never do it again.

If you can't maintain smooth quarter and half throttle inputs during a turn, rapidly pushing the throttle and feathering it on and off can also work once you lose traction.

For me the brakes should be set as far towards the rear as you are comfortable with, I usually use +2 or 3. This helps get the rear out and gives the front tyres a bit more turning ability. Also, I second the point above about using the brakes whilst on throttle, but mostly this should be more of a mid-high speed cornering technique. IRL rally drivers use this technique to help change direction by quickly loading the front tyres and not allowing the revs to drop too much. It works real well in the game too 👍.
Also try using 1 gear higher than suggested in the slower corners, this should give you better control on loose surfaces (would have just said gravel but I'm hoping we get snow back again :D).
I also second the point about using the brakes indicator as a guide too 👍.

But the best advice I can give you, is to use the arcade mode and practice the tracks for a while. The best way to pass any test, is to study and practice :D:tup:.

I've so far used the Focus for all rally challenges on one profile and the Evo on another and both did the job, So I'm guessing the Subaru, Lancia and Audi will all manage too if they are allowed.

Good luck .

It may seem obvious but you are adjusting the 4WD so that it's 50/50? It starts at 20/80 I believe and with all that power going to the rear wheels it can be tough to pull yourself out of corners. I found that with 50/50 and slowing down early while keeping one gear higher than recommended then all the rally challenges (except the last one) were fairly simple. never more than 2/3 tries for gold.

Thanks all for the tips, really appreciated. Trying them out, will report back on any progress! All good but notable is use of the brake indicator.... don't use that normally but here it is showing that I need to brake much more often than I have been doing. Early (like, really early!) turning is helping too.

Usually I put it at 40/60 so that I could drift a little around the corners rather than turning around them since it's slippery. But putting it in 50/50 sure does give a neutral acceleration compared to a biased one that may be tail happy.

Rally driving in this game is so unrealistic bad that it's just enough to set traction control 0 and drive and slide manually all challenges. Even the races against opponents.

I’m hoping it will give me a bit more forward bite/acceleration.

And it did. It was default 40/60. Changed to 50/50 and here we are:

Ahh... I should try on that for the challenges, since I'm more looking for better handling in tighter dirt tracks. Imagine we could go beyond 50/50 for more front torque.

Speaking of mission challenges, I gave up after 6-7 because theres no way im doing 30 laps of Maggiore chasing the rabbit. That is the epitome of dull.

Did it this evening. It's actually quite fun as it's a multi-class race. You will get a bronze (er hem) if you don't finish last, and as you start 20th out of 30 that's not hard to do. Got lapped by a Mercedes SL and a Lambo...... :ill: (but did improve position!)

More fun than the bloody rally race which I just cannot get to grips with! Tried all the really helpful suggestions (except buying the Audi.... 450k, it's not the car, it's me), improved, but a long way to go.

Yeah, I didn’t mind the Maggiore one either. I actually found some of them fun and challenging in a good way. The last Nurburgring race is great for getting to know the track and having a good race against the AI. Rally ones aside the most difficult for me was the six lap race in Brazil. The R8 was just too fast. I eventually won after many tries by pitting on my first lap and being super aggressive chasing him in the two tight corners in the infield section. I didn’t smash into him (tried, he won’t spin ) but dive bombing inside and forcing him out.

The campaign mode gets pooped on a lot, and for good reasons, but there is some legitimately good stuff in there that most people should figure out how to do well before they go online and race.
