Momentary System Failure

Filibuster

I heard on NPR today that democrats in the senate have been filibustering the same topic for over a month now,.... I dont know the specifics but it's not the point. The point is.....

Doesnt this slow down the system?

Is'nt this tactic a little outdated for our current fast-paced society?

What are the benifits to us as citizens when our leaders read from a telephone book for a month straight, just to try and 'out-with the other party?

I'd really appreciate some feedback from more politically oriented individuals,.. but regular opinions are also welcome.

When I first learned of this tatic in American Goverment back in High school, I too was a bit confused on why this was still being used. Mainly I think there are two reasons why nothing has been done about changing, or eminated it.

1) Not to many people like, and agree with the modification of the oringal constitution, as far as the way the government runs.

2) Both parties still enjoy using it. Sure they hate it when its being used againist them, but they also realize in three months they too will be doing the same thing.

They keep it cause it works..it keeps the minority opinion from being steamrollered. And sometimes allows a valid point to be made than may swing the vote the otherway.

Hence the point. The filibuster is to slow down the system so the process can't take place (in this instance, the confirmation of a new federal judge).

Usually, the threat of a filibuster is enough to help both parties work together, however in this case, it's hard to work together because there's exactly two sides to this issue with no room for compromise.
